Tunnels in downtown Denver

It came to my attention today that there is a tunnel system that runs from the Oxford Hotel to the Brown Palace and to the Hotel Teatro....don't know much about it other than the fact that they were used to shuttle prostitutes between hotels for visiting dignitaries back in the day. From what I heard, the access has been blocked off at the Oxford hotel, but that just means that we will have to be creative. If you know of these and have anymore info. please let me know. I'll update as I get more information

While it makes a great urban legend, I imagine the tunnels were used for much more mundane tasks like shuttling over a tray of egg-salad sandwiches, or sharing a boilerroom. ;)

Yes those tunnels do exist. My father worked in downtown Denver back in the 1930's. According to him they were used to shuttle politicians and visiting important gentlemen around to the cat houses so they could get laid without getting caught. He also said that it was fairly well known that Al Capone would stay at the Brown Palace when he came to Denver and used tose tunnels to hide out in a few times. I think most of the explorers in Denver would love to find access to the "Tunnels Under Denver" but so far it has just been a Holy Grail that is eluding us. The current rumor is that the tunnels under the Brown Palace are still in use and have alarms. If you EVER find out about access to this underground paradise, I'm sure there are a few of us that would be interested in cracking the nut!

Confirmed: tunnel from Brown Palace to Navarro Building (right across 17th).
Confirmed: Navarro Building served as a house of ill fame (gambling and prostitution), as it were.
Confirmed: Original intended use of tunnels notwithstanding, this one WAS used for affluent gentlemen to discreetly visit some high-class early 20th Century hookers.

At this point, the existence, use or current accessibility of any other tunnel is all speculative, but odds are in our favor that most if not all of them are in fact there.
And every new story makes this goliath that much bigger, and that much more compelling...

Statik, if I may be so bold, what are your sources of confirmation?

You can get a tour on new years eve, typically. Just call the brown palace, their proud of it. It's part of their heritage.

It's also pretty reliably confirmed that there is a set of steam tunnels between some of the bigger gvt buildings including the state cap.

These tunnels are very much in use and have active steam/data/electric utilities and security.

I would not be surprised if that's what's been seen over at the library site as well.

What I'm still looking and hoping for are the coal tunnels used for delivery through downtown in the 1900-1920's.

Legend has it that a tunnel connected the Brown Palace with the Navarre building across the street. Persistent rumors insist that gentlemen staying at the hotel traveled discreetly by rail car through the tunnel to the Navarre, at the time a house of gambling and prostitution. It has never been proven that a tunnel existed, but subterranean tracks leading to a brick wall have been located beneath the Navarre.

Yeah, it's all "legend has it" this and "sources say" that. But when independent sources all say the same thing, things start to come together.
I'd like to take a run at both buildings, with a team of sympathetic surveyors who work for free, and a couple million dollars worth of borrowed equipment...

I believe that was just a hooker tunnel. Fun to see, no less. But I think there are some that go out under most of downtown, not just from whore house to hotel. ;)

Here's a tunnel story I haven't seen posted here yet.

During the construction of the new parking facility on the north end of the Auraria campus, crews hit a void while placing support pylons. Construction was halted for investigation.

It turns out they had hit on an old supply tunnel leading from the rail yards to the Tivoli brewery. The tunnel had been used to shuttle supplies and beer back and forth from the trains.

A handful of people from the Denver historical society came in and found the tunnel to be half filled with silt, 100 years of random bits of garbage, and blocked off at both ends.

The opening was sealed, and as far as I know, there are no remaning entrances to the tunnel.

Incidentally, construction crews found another void at this same site. While filling a previously drilled hole with as part of a retaining wall, they realized that the hole they were filling was taking a lot more concrete than expected. They assumed they had hit an air pocket, and just kept pouring it in. The void turned out to be the sewage pipes for the baseball field restrooms.
