| | | Posted by Plytheman Just be happy all this is for free, a year ago you had to pay for Keyhole.

I remember Keyhole. I was pissed that it didn't work on Macs when it first came out.
Another thing I realized about Google Earth is that if you zoom in too far on certain areas and it says something along the lines of "we're sorry, information on this area is unavailable please zoom back out" it really means "there's some really cool stuff here that you're not supposed to see." I was zooming in on this area near some government buildings out in the woods and when I got zoomed in too far I got that message. When I scrolled off that area, the pictures came back. So stay on the lookout for areas that come up blank when zoomed in...these places might turn out to be more than they seem!

| | | Most of the time you get the information unavailable message because they simply dont have an image that is that close. For example, go out into the middle of the woods in NY and zoom all the way in, they dont have the image because it isnt interesting enough to have the image. Now around government buildings I can see why you cant get too close, but for the most part it is just because there isnt anything special there.

In that case, a great deal of WV is amazingly cool. While I do think my state is cool in some ways, it's not at the level of really cool stuff you're not supposed to see. Sometimes, it just means that the satellites don't bother to look there, as in, "Who'd want to see close-ups of West Virginia?" Well I would...

| | | No, you're probably right, sometimes. If there's a small area you can't see and a large area around it you can, then I'd chalk it up to hiding something. But less populated areas don't get much treatment from any of the satellite overflight services.

| | | 3 Years?!!! That's worse than when I look up and the stars, the data I see when I look at the heavens are many hundreds of light years old! WTF?!!? What good is looking at the stars if the one I like has maybe become a supernova or a red dwarf or something?! I won't know that for hundreds of years.

sounds like it would be an expensive service, and you could only see what was right under the sat as its gong by anyway....which would suck.

You could call the NSA, I'm sure they have something along those lines.

| | | Yeah I love google earth! One thing that would be kinda cool is if they archived different years for thier images, and you could just pick certain ones. Like ya either wanna see the most recent ones , or ya wanna check out older ones, that would be pretty cool.

Anymore who knows. There should be alot of Russian sats that they might be selling time on, cash being a bit tight in the Kremlin these days. Or some company with a sat up. With the tech today it might happen. Might happen soon. Just figured I'd see if someone had seen one yet.

| | | I know there was a company offering (selling by the image) up to date satellite images for businesses, wealthy homeowners and such but I can't seem to find them online. I think I first saw them on Daily Planet, if that helps anybody else find them. Personally, I've been using TOMaps since 2003. Yeah, they use the same images from 2002 that everybody else uses, but it's really well integrated with municipal maps and "interesting places to visit" and stuff. Not as easy to move around either. But, nothing to download and install. You have to zoom in a fair amount before it gives you the option for aerial view. (not satellite, guessing a helicopter or something.)

| | | I only meant this post as a heads up thats all! When people begin a reply with "I disagree..blah..blah" it just show's that they did'nt really read the post in full, because clearly there is nothing to disagree with. These are fantastic resources that are really usefull for many things.I will continue to refer to these services for info no matter how old the pictures are.Just wanted to inform people who are not yet aware of the current image dates.I know it took me a couple months before I figured it out after I went somewhere I would have never gone had I known of it's current condition.A bad situation resulted from this outdated information but by the time we realized that fact,it was too late.So I was just hoping to let people learn from my mistake.that's all.

| | | I considered using Google Earth, the only other free satellite imaging site I've found had really dated images. Like 6 years old or so, not very reliable.
