Coal Heating ?

Does anyone here recognise this piece of iron ? I think it is perhaps a coal heating pit formerly used to heat this building. N.

You could be right. It looks very much like an adobe basement heater I saw in Korea.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Is that right? Interesting, this one of course has been long forgotten and resides in the basement of a 120 year old building. N.

I'd sure say it is. Another thing to check is if there's a coal-chute on the outside of the house that would lead into that room. It's probably a metal door about 20cm(8") square or possibly bigger. Probably says coal something on it too. If the outside has been redone it could be gone though. Either way, it looks a lot like a coal room to me.

I don't think so but I may be wrong. Coal was used to fire a boiler which provided steam to radiators in other parts of the building/house. Using coal in an open top burner wouldn't be too smart due to carbon monoxide which would poison everyone. This may be the bottom half or a piece of a coal boiler though.

This is a picture of the building, I believe it was originally a train station. I will return soon to this place to check something else and I will look for a chute.

This building looks pretty original, especially in it's bowels, although it looks as though they added a wing on either side of the main structure. N.

Yes it may have been partially dismantled at one time, it is a curious thing though to see all of these ashes from another time piled up there . N.

Everyone's been talking about train tunnels from that building lately. Looks like you've been in there, what is the definitive answer? My guess is there are no tunnels.

I know, it has been a point of interest for a lot of people for a long time. A few weeks ago I was talking to the archivist for the City of New West, she gets regular phonecalls from citizens inquiring about the tunnels.

Usually after a night out at the Keg. It really is an awesome little building, with some really cool artifacts used for part of the decor. N.
