MSA Full Face Respirator

I just found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2561488609&category=11905

On Ebay and I was wondering what someone with experience with respirators thought of it. It seems like a pretty good deal compared to the others I've seen. It says it filters out NBC particles but I find this sort of questionable.

Anyway tell me what you think.

I'm suspicious of some of the claims, just because they're selling it with the "protect your family from terrorism" angle, and the fact that they state the respirator would be of use in a fire to guard against smoke [inhalation]. Any respirator cartridge will quicky become clogged in an eviroment of heavy smoke, this is one of the reasons fire fighters don't wear 'em...

The mask looks like an Ultravue mask, and I'd guess it is because I couldn't find anything on any "Ultra" masks made by MSA. If it is Ultravue, it's definitely a quality mask, but I'd get in touch with the sellers to have them double-check the name before you bid: Maybe "Ultra" was a discontinued model or similar.

The only information that turned up in a quick search for that filter part number was the fact that 5% of them apparently failed to meet OSHA standards. A quick check of some industrial supply catalogs didn't turn up any filter being currently being sold similar to that one that is compatible with the Ultravue mask, my guess is that filter actually is out of service, but that's only a guess.

General etiquette concerning the purchase of gas masks: I wouldn't buy anything unless I got it in writing that you were going to recieve it in unopened condition. Mask and filter should be sealed in plastic bags. Otherwise, you have absolutely no way of knowing if it was used or not and what for.

All in all, it's not a bad mask, and you can get replacement filters cheap enough, especially more generic filters than NBC. NBC filters in themselves are also relatively cheap, but unless you're planning on exploring a nuclear reactor housing, not necessary.

I use an MSA Ultra Twin mask when exploring/crafting.. I wouldn't recomend going with the mask in the auction. Thou I'm certain it's of fine quality, I doubt you'll like how heavy that single front filter is. That and getting new filters for it would be a royal pain in the butt.

This is the google cache of what's left of my safety page. (I need to find a new host) It may be able to shed a little light on the whole respirator issue for you..

Given my druthers, I'd go with a mask that takes easily replaceable canisters, not the big cartrages like that. Too much can go wrong with the cartrage. that, and the cartrages are heavy. Canisters arn't too bad..

Wait for an ultra-twin to come up, or check you local stores for someting you can easily replace the canisters on...

My main beef with this mask for UE'ing is that it's full face. Sure, if you're worried about tear gas it's a good thing to have, but underground it won't provide any protection a half-face mask wouldn't provide but it will have the side affects of poor visibility, even if it doesn't get fogged up, which it probably will.

A half mask and a good set of safetly glasses (not goggles, goggles will fog) should provide the protection you need.

I'm partial to respirators/masks with the "cheek pouch" filters, a la the old M17 masks. 3M makes (made?) a full-face and half-face industrial respirator of this design, among others. The huge filter at the front of the mask gets annoying superquick, as anyone who's worn one can likely attest. The side-mounted cannister type are a little more tolerable... but I'm both left-handed and left-eyed. Most of the side-cannister types have the filter mounted on the left side, because that's most people's "weak side", but it gets in the way of using a camera. The low-profile cheek filter seems to be the least of several evils, at least for me... but not everyone is into taking pictures wearing a gas mask.

The full face ones are good for draining so crap doesn't get into your eyes.

What sort of drains are you going into that you need a full face respirator? I can't even think of anything in a drain that a respirator would really protect you from, except perhaps mold. Even then you'd be hot and tired if it was a drain of any significant size.

A lot of cartridges are rated for escape from H2S pockets. Personally, I think a better investment would be a gas detector. By the time you figure out you're amongst that nonsense and put your respirator on, you could've just turned around and walked back out of it.
