Red Filter for Reactor or similar flashlights

Thanks to Pyro2525 I managed to acquire some red gel for my flashlight, and set about figuring out how to install it into my flashlight.

My flashlight, a Reactor LED light, similar models are sold at Best Buy under a similar name. This is the 3 D Cell body.

Materials Needed:
- Red Gel
- Flashlight of the same style of mine
- scissors
- small slot style screw driver

Step 1: Remove the front part of the flashlight exposing the LED

section outlined in red

Inside the front unit will look like this:

Step 2: Remove the reflector and lens, using the screw driver remove the white retainer ring, shown below

The parts will now all be laid out for you.

Step 4: Using the lens as a template draw a circle onto the gel and cut out the filter to match the lens.

Step 5: Replace the lens into the housing, and the red filter into the housing. So that the lens remains on the outer part of the light to protect the filter.

Step 6: Replace the reflector and screw in the retainer ring.

Step 7: Place the lens housing back onto the main body of the flashlight.

That's it, you're done.

Yeah I thought about using it the same way, but then you can't switch between filtered and unfiltered. Eventually I'm going to make some sort of cap that involves duct tape and a rubber band. Also the filter kills a lot of light on our particular flashlights because both of our luxeon's are blue tinted.

For anyone wanting to get this red gel cheap it's sold at active surplus in Toronto for 50cents a foot or something like that.

I have a pair of these flashlights, one has a bad switch, so I have a clear lens housing and a red one. ;)

and,

headlamp w/ two front beam lights, two ambient lights, and two red filter lights
- having to pay for it
- head strap
+ easy release fastener
+ belt buckle
= light that doesn't get in my eyes, has four light modes, comes from my crotch, and is removable.

This is the way the world ends.

Thanks for the idea, Axle. And to address pyro2525's concern about easily switching filters and incorporating Neo's suggestion...

The Maglite Accessory Pack for D Cell Flashlight consists of:

- Lens Holder / Anti-Roll Device
- Lens Set (Amber, Blue, Red)
- D Size Mounting Brackets
51703.jpg (93 kb, 640x480)

The Maglite head is 57.0mm while the Dorcy/Reactor head is 57.7mm in diameter - so the plastic "Anti-roll device" can be forced to fit the Dorcy if you don't mind stretching it out and having a too-loose fitting ring if you ever decide to use it back on the Mag.

The red filter does indeed cut down on the light output considerably given the initial bluish tinting of the LED.

When projected on a wall, the corona around the central focused spot is all but invisible now. The yellow filter may be a good compromise while still preserving some night vision and rendering colors a bit more accurately. The Blue one is claimed to help penetrate through smoke and fog.

The two plastic pincer type snap brackets come with 4 phillips wood screws (2 each). Since I dug all that out I decided to mount the flashlight behind my front door. For any contingency. NOTE that the spacing accommodates 4D Mag, but barely a 2D.

And for those of you that don't have a ready supply of red gel material:

Lighting gels of every hue. We buy ours for the local theater group from this place.

Thanks for the resource, Jonsered.

I don't know anything about "gels" - the theatre spotlight kind. I have a few scraps of red and blue "gel" material from years ago. I'm sure it wasn't official theatre-grade... I made my own make-shift 3-D glasses. I don't know where I got it but I'm sure it was some run-of-the-mill art supply place - the chincy kind. Sorta like one where you could get all sorts of colored bristol board. Not uppity artsy places that would have oil paints and the little wooden posable manikins either.

So I'm just wondering out loud here, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't something designated for theatre/stage be more expensive than some dollar-store colored plastic? (assuming it's available in dollar stores).

You are absolutely correct oldtimer. The cost for theater grade is higher, no doubt about it. And I suspect cheaper stuff would work just fine. Some people simply may not have access, time, etc. The world lives life on the internet these days! My other point for the good stuff is better light penetration and dispersion. Not that big a deal mind you, and I'm not trying to be nit picky.

He gave me the idea to use my D cell Maglights(have 2 & hate them) as nice permanent grab handles on my storage building doors.

I've been feeling funny since I went in that open crypt. Not sure what it is.

Since we're talking about mods I'll share the one I have on my clone of Axle's flashlight (mine is from Dorcy) that can be used on many heavy lights with a big head. It's quite cheap and very useful with a large light like this. It requires two regular zip ties, a standard 1 inch keychain ring, and a D-clip, all of which might cost a dollar or two. Simply put one tie into another, put the keychain ring onto the tie, put the ties around the body of the light and pull them tight, then put a D-clip on it. Voila, no more worrying about having to hold your light while you don't need it, or it falling out of your pocket while running, etc.

Zip ties? Keychain ring? D-clip? I need a picture. I have no idea what this combination produces.

I don't happen to have a camera at my disposal right now, but basically it's a clip so you can clip your flashlight to your belt loops. Two zipties hold a keychain ring onto the flashlight and a D-clip it attached to the keychain ring and your belt. I'll get pictures eventually.

There, again thanks to Pyro2525 for the idea I installed one on my flashlight, however I only needed one zip tie as it was a big one.

From my experience today I suggest using several zip ties to secure the ring in place, as mine broke today after taking a 2 foot jump off a rock. However it fell on the butt end of the flashlight so there's no serious damage.
