Mask Filters.

I'm wondering... If I buy a P100 filter for a gas mask it will probably last me for a long time right? All it needs to do is filter asbestos, not CS or anything like that. So it might last for more than 8 hours of use? I ask because I don't want to buy $30 filters every 8 hours.

I use the piss out of my filters. I think the one on there right now probably has 20+ hours on it. With a particulate filter as long as you can still inhale air through it easily then I think it will do it's job. I replace my filters when they start to get torn up from riding around in my pack. It would be a totally different case with carbon filters as they are actually "grabbing" gasses in the activated carbon as opposed to just stopping particles.

Maybe I'm screwing up by overusing my filters, but i seriously doubt it. Some protection is better than none anyway.

As far as I know, particulate-only filters only need to be replaced when they become difficult to breathe through. There's no active component that degrades with exposure to air. How long it takes to clog depends on how much you use it and how much crap is in the air. I've got some infrequently used p100s that I've had for 9 months or so and they're still as good as the day I bought them.

That's the point of the P100 rating. To be able to continue to use them till the become soiled. As long as they aren't soiled and difficult to breathe through you're good.

It is not necessary to replace the carts every 8 hours! The carbon mixtures in the carts have time limits based on exposure to contaminants, not exposure to air. the p-100 section of the mask works untill breathing becomes noticeably more difficult. Based on normal UE usage, it would only be necessary to replace your carts every couple of months. This being said, DO TAPE THE EXPOSED ENDS OF THE MASK, to prevent exposure. As well put it in a bag. this will ensure long life, and enjoyable use!

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

In between uses. You either tape the ends of the filter to prevent gas passage, or you put it into a ziplock and take all the air out.

A few caveats however - The P100 in "P100 cartridge" refers only to the mask's ability to filter particulate matter. You'll be fine against asbestos et al until the carts are hard to breath through.

However, if you have an ammonia cart, or a chlorine, OV et cetera, you WILL NOT NOTICE when this is saturated. The best thing to do is, if you hit say a methane pocket or something else that might degrade your filters, get a new cart before your next mission. ESPECIALLY if you hit chlorine or aerial mercury - any exposure to either will RUIN your cart's ability to filter the other one.

Your paying too much for your filters! I got a box of 6 MSA combo carts for less than 30.

I've been feeling funny since I went in that open crypt. Not sure what it is.
