Legislative Building - Regina, SK.

Anybody ever find anything neat inside the Legislative building in Regina, SK? There's a tunnel there which used to go from the Legislative under the lake and to the old power station, where the Science Center is now, about 1 km away. My friends grandpa used to work there as a steam engineer decades ago. Not sure if that tunnel still exists, they made the lake deeper a couple years ago so they might have destroyed the old tunnel in the process. Also before that the east wing was raised several inches because it was sinking.

Sounds like an urban legend to me bud. I don't think they would have gone to such a bother and expense as building a long tunnel under the Wascana just to feed the legislature. I'd say it's way more than 1 km away too.

Actually I think it would only have to pass under a short section of Wascana Lake to the immediate east of the Legislative building. It would only have to go under 200 meters of the lake. The old power house being about 1 km east of the Legislative. Check out google maps for the sattelite image.

I just remembered that the legislative building itself has it's own power station that was built at the same time around 1910. It's about 100m behind the main building and is connected by an underground service tunnel. You can see the ventilation shafts that run between the two and even see light coming from inside them at night.

This wasn't the tunnel my friends grandfather spoke of though. he said there was a small rail car for moving things along the tunnel. He worked at the Power House (the current science center) as a steam engineer. The tunnel he was speaking of might not have went to the legislative building at all now that I think about it. He said it went undeer the lake but maybe that was just for servicing the pipes that brought water in to the station for cooling.

Somebody out there must know more about this...

Bingo that is correct.

Now just to keep this interesting there was once a steam tunnel network in the downtown area. I have no idea about when they were in operation or if any of them still exist but a friend of mine worked on asbestos abatement in the tunnels approx 10 years ago. I grilled him for where they had accessed the tunnels and was told that they had accessed them through a trench by the casino. I believe the casino (Old Union Station) was connected to the network at one time. Does anyone have any info on them.

You can probably get some maps from the city showing the tunnels. Just go to underground structures mapping department.

I heard once that there were tunnels that went down hamilton st, etc originating from the train station. If they really did exist, I would venture they were used for transporting coal or goods. Did your friend say specifically that the tunnels went beyond the site of the casino? Maybe the post office was connected to the casino in order to share steam? Good luck getting into the basement of the casino. I've only been down there a couple times, they have a huge ass vault down there.

i know its probably off topic, but here in Edmonton our Legislature Building has something called "The Palm Room" where Palm trees were planted in 1931 and have grown to be taller then 30 feet tall. the area is in the dome roof of the building and was shut down to the public in the 1980s as it was a fire hazard. the trees can still be seen when you look up towards the roof.

anyways, i took a tour of the building with my fiance over a year ago. we broke off from the tour and found the entrance to the stairwell that leads to the palm room. really lite exploration but still worth the excursion if you are in Edmonton....

Yeah last I know of portions of the Leg in Regina are closed to the public (other than the offices that is). The way I see it, light or otherwise, it's still exploring.

I have heard of the tunnels from the Legislative building. One the runs south to the power plant, another to the Queen Building east under the lake. When they dug up the lake it could mean either that a) they didn't exist b) they are really deep!

I so wanted to explore the Molson brewery. Did anybody get the opportunity and record it via pics? I had also heard of tunnels underneath and heading out from there.

In my job I deal with most of Regina's maint. personal. One such group being SPM which deals with the Leg. building. After speaking with them I can confirm there are tunnels which lead to other government buildings such as the T.D. Douglas building. The way you can tell where these tunnels run is the grass above them is the first to turn green in the spring.

Currently I am trying to secure a tour of the lower areas. I'll keep you guys posted.
