Discouraging looters?

There's a building near me that I've visited several times with little to no luck getting in. A guy I know from the gym decided he would go, despite my request that he didn't, with a friend of his who previously took pretty much everyone he knows to an old asylum and eventually gained police attention - six squadcars of police attention, to be precise. Naturally, this does not bode well for people such as us who like to get in such places with a minimum of attention, security, and a maximum of restraint and respect.

Regardless, this guy from the gym went yesterday and met some guys there who were already trying to get in. This is an old coal plant, yet they were there without respirators or any sort of respiratory protection. They had a bunch of stuff they took from the inside and were on their way out. They exchanged numbers with this guy's friend and told him of some other places they know of.

Now, I really hate to approach this hobby from an elitist standpoint, but it's often very difficult in situations such as this not to. The idea of the "wrong kind of explorer" doesn't come from the morals of their activities, rather, it comes from the consequences - doing things sloppily, such as the old asylum, gets attention and makes it extremely difficult to impossible to gain entrance to buildings. It would be nice to be able to control this.

These guys are going back in a day or two, and I'm trying to think of a good way to discourage them. I though about posting some sort of a sign claiming to know of their attempts to get in, putting up police tape, or even throwing on a vest and posing as a utility worker. Anything to scare these guys off. Any ideas?

I hate those kind of *pardon my french* assholes. Here is a list of things you could do

1. if you dont care about going to this location, Call the Cops (not the best idea)

2. Do like you said and pose as utility
3. Put up signs all over the place stating that there is a deadly chemical spill
4. Make a call stating that you are the owner and have them on camera enter the place (i dont know if that would work)
5. Rent a Cop costume and hang around that day

Might be an easier way, i am just creative...

THe problem with people who go "The more police are involved, the worse it is for us!", is that they don't take into account the obvious.

As police stations start to realise that UE-people *report* criminals in the buildings they respect, then they start to appreciate when they catch *you* in a building and all you have is a camera, that *you* are not a threat.

I'm not totally sure that it works like that.. if your a vigilante they don't thank you, they club you in the back of the face..

Just tell the guys that theres some random chem spill or other hazard in there to make them not go.. but chances are they will anyways, or some other moron will... it's a losing battle really..

That doesn't stop them from beefing up security, and it's quite probable that they would classify any trespasser by the behavior of the worst - tagging, theft, etc.

actually not to mention, criminals are normally creative.. So if I am a criminal and I want to loot the crap out of some place, All I have to do is if the cops show up drop what I am stealing and pull out some shitty camera and it's a get outa jail free card? doesn't sound right....

Hell, they do that around here anyway.... Last time I called the cops for a ligit purpose, I ended up getting arrested myself followed by the cop giving a nice "man hug" to the guy I called the cops on. Learned an invaluable lesson that day!!

If you have some respirators you could get a couple friends to approach them and act like they are contaminated or something. Put the fear of anthrax in them or something.

It's amazing how many people will shit themselves and leg it if they hear a manly, booming "HEY!". quite often nothing more is necessary.

Alternately, the 'fucking crazy man in an abandoned building' works. just make lots of noise, shout about getting out of your home, run at them waving some piece of something that looks mean. They won't come back.

If you're not covered in dirt and dressed strangely, you're not exploring right! But then, I look like a hobo on a good day!
