Anyone thinking of taking a "tour" of the area shouldn't wait too much longer. The fucking developers have gotten hold of this one.

It certainly doesn't surprize me, but it sure as hell pisses me off. This leaves the only working roundhouse in North America in Cranbrook

It was going to happen sooner or later.

The Greedheads have taken over. The city is going into Expansion mode. Quiet little Victoria is gone.

From that roundhouse site - "The historic brick buildings and the turntable have been recognized as a National Historic Site and as Municipal Heritage Property. The passenger cars are still repaired in the one operational bay of the Roundhouse, while the Stores building houses millwork shops. The entire complex will be rehabilitated and revitalized as part of the development of these and the adjacent lands."

As someone has been on a couple of tours of the old CP Rail Roundhouse in Toronto, now home of steamwhistle brewery, I can say that as much as I enjoy abandoned buildings, I also see the rehabilitation of these buildings (to the point that they are not DEVELOPED and turned into studio condos) as a good thing. Bays 1-11 of the CP Rail Roundhouse were actually taken down. They then put in multiple stories of a conference centre underground, and rebuilt the roundhouse back up again. Because it is still a National Heritage site, they MUST give tours, and I'll tell you, they are good tours. Sure, there is now a brewery inside, but the amount of preservation is amazing, and the building is remarkably intact.

You should see the inside of the unrestored portion of the John Street Roundhouse in which Steam Whistle Brewing is Located.

There are several locomotives and cars owned by the Toronto Railway Historical Society Stored within the building. I've only ever seen pictures, but it is normally open for Doors Open Toronto on the 27th and 28th, and i think i am finally going to make it to see them.
