Yes, I use a rock climbing safety harness and either a fixed rope (anchored overhead or to biners along the way) or a daisy chain made of 3 foot slings when I place or search for extreme geocaches on cliffs or underneath abandoned railroad bridges. I will try to attach an image or two of one such outing; foto was taken last summer on an abandoned RR bridge 70 feet above the Raritan River in Central NJ.

On the other hand, a dear friend and I placed an extreme geocache recently on the steel structure under an abandoned RR bridge 134 feet over a river gorge in Wyoming, and we did not -- simply due to the fact that I had not traveled with my gear -- use any climbing safety gear at all. Foto below:

Hope this helps!

depends on the tower, I've been up a bunch of longlines towers, which have ladders and walkways etc, i don't normally wear much for those. But being that i've actually done work on towers before, i have most of the safety gear, so anything over about 20 feet normally gets some equipment brought out for it.

I've got climbing gear or a full harness. I'll typically wear the climbing harness if i want minimal gear and i'm just monkeying around with 1 rope and a few attachment points, that way i can rappel down after ;)

The full harness normally gets used with lanyards.

Yah Thats what i have two full harness with lanyards , the flat rope thing that clips on your back and has two hooks on the other end so that you can always..be connected.

I have to try running in one,see what its like.

normally every time I go out exploring something I throw my harness on and we have at least 50ft of rope/hook.. we don't always use them, but when we do it makes life ALOT easier...

Not just webbing, I have a bunch of the shock absorber ones that are 4' short, and about 10' long, kind of bungie ish. Add a couple of oversized beiners and maybe a loop or to if the attachment points are really big. I also like 2 lanyards instead of the 1 hook to 2 lanyards, the more points the better

Typically I will use ropes if Im doing something really stupid, but not if its only a ladder. However, if you're thin you can climb up the inside of the ladder, between the building (watertower...) and the ladder, so that if you fall you can't fall away from it. If you're wearing big clothing it can be awkward to go down, cause it all gets scrunched up, but oh well. If I'm taking other (inexperienced) people I'm more likely to use safty gear cause I'd feel horrible if they got effed up. Its one thing to get your own leg broken.....
