It also is diffrent on a case by case basis. The place I am talking about is not well secured nor does the city overly care.

It's not secured well ? But you need to cut chains to get in ?

what i mean is there isnt security 24/7, cameras, motion detectors, all that stuff....they paid probably $20 on a length of chain and a master lock....compared to most places (as of all people you should well know) that isnt the most secure place in the world

then my question would be how in the hell was cutting a lock the only option? if this site is in such disrepair and nobody cares about it and the only amount of resistance it offers in a padlock and a few feet of chain.. it's that statement that makes the hacksaw seem like it was the first option..

Ok let me explain the entire situation. School in this town, without a fence around. All doors locked, with none of us able to pick locks. All windows, including skylights are boarded up. Any basement entrance was locked tight. The only way that we could find to get in that was a little easier and made less of a mess and noise than a crowbar or C4 was to hacksaw the chain locking the front doors.

You're in MA ? So that's Massachusetts ?

Trespassing. That's when you're caught and didn't break shit or give them just cause to charge you with B&E.

Penalty ?

Ranging from no fine/criminal record, to possibly paying fines and court fees, up to a maximumum penalty of three months in jail.

This is sooooo cool.

Cutting the chains or smashing windows to get in ? No problem making a B&E charge stick to you.

Penalty ?

A Massachusetts breaking and entering charge can have serious consequences. For Breaking and Entering with intent to commit a misdemeanor, the penalties can go up to 6 months in prison. If you are convicted of breaking and entering with intent to commit a felony, the penalties can go up to 20 years in prison.

Sweet.

You really dont think that doing things like this you dont accept a level of risk. On a scale from 1-10 this was a 2 on the getting into shit-o-meter. I think as a UE you take into consideration the fact that you can get caught at any random place. I also took that into consideration when I did what I did. Not knowing the law when you do this is simply stupid. I knew what I was getting myself into an accepted it. Sorry if that doesnt fly with you but like I said I couldnt care less about what you think about my methods. I dont care if you think them wrong or unethical. How about we go on our way, do our own thing, and drop it.

Your methods are no different than any other destructive jerk out there, except you rationalize it to justify it. Break the windows, smash the doors, cut the locks, do whatever you want and say it doesn't matter.

One day you'll grow up and see that it did matter...

Ok I have been to a few places and this is the only "destructive" thing ive done. I dont tag, I dont smash, I dont break. I have yet to break a window, crowbar a door something along those lines. So dont lump me into that catagory of the "destructive jerks" because amazingly enough I actually do care about the places I go to. I'm not there to destroy, I'm there to explore and pardon me for being one to point this out but a goddamn chain wasnt there from the begining so it its part of the building itself no matter what you say. So dont you dare lump me into that catagory.

If you cared then you wouldn't be cutting anything. You'd either find a better way or wait.

Ok wait around for someone else to do open something or do it yourself. If i had not said anything about this and you wait to this place you would be happy that i opened the place....just that you wouldnt have yelled at me for it. Like I said I honestly dont care what you think at this point because any respect i had for you was lost by your stubborness and feeling that anyone that doesnt do it the way you do is wrong...sorry i dont conform to what you want someone to be and be what you consider the perfect moral UE...you are basicly making generalizations that because of the chain the place is shot to shit. I locked it back up, its not like i left it the hell open which is the main bone of contention...nothing is changed of this place and im not gonna change just cause someone that thinks he is high and mighty tells me otherwise so sorry im not what you want in a UE but i couldnt care less

Any respect you had for me was lost ? Yeah, it's pretty sad when a person actually has the strength of character to stick to their ethics and not just cave on them and say "Oh I guess destruction of property is good" simply because you rationalize what you did. What did you expect to happen ?

Whether you left it open isn't the issue to me at all.

1. What you did is clear cut B&E.
2. It shows anyone that checks the place that someone had done so.
3. If you changed the lock, you still cost the owner money and would make them aware of whats happening. Results can be higher security and less leniancy if an explorer is caught there. Maybe it doesn't hit you, but it still has an impact.

It's needing to look farther than 2 feet in front of you. Your view is so small minded that you see nothing but yourself.

This was written quite some time ago now, and is just as relevant when applied to vandals as it is to thieves.

Getting in there in the manner you did has much less to do with body weight, and much more to do with laziness to find a better way, or patience to wait for the right opportunity.

as far as "body weight" goes, how is that even an issue? It's not like you had to vault anything, you said yourself there was no fence.. so I am not sure where the argument of you being too big is even an issue other then trying to sidestep the issue of finding a better way in.. So I gotta agree with Jester here, sounds mostly like laziness since weight has completely nothing to do with anything here..

I just have one question (but it's really 3): How have any of you gotten into any building? Did you use a window that was already broken? Have you gone through a door that the lock was already busted off? Sure, what he did was wrong, and yeah, he could have looked for an easier way in, but he didn't. Don't get on his case because he admitted it.

Hey man, I didn't mean it that way. I'm not persecuting you, so please don't take it like that; I feel bad now that you did. It's the fact that you used your condition as justification/an excuse for cutting chains, smashing stuff up, etc that I take issue with. As others have said, it just sounds like overall laziness. If you're going to use something like that to explain yourself, though, expect to be called out on it.

It's not as though I'm perfect, either - the groups I've gone exploring with have ended up having to break locks or windows to gain entrance. We're not proud of the fact, and we won't be doing it anymore. I would fully expect the same kind of response you've gotten here.

ok if it is needed to get into a place, yes i will break a window or pry off a piece of plywood....other than that would i do any other damage to a place no....is that my first option of entrance, no

Yes, because you NEED to get in there to do your hobby. It's ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE that you enter that building, otherwise, nobody will believe that you're an 31337 Gravitationally Challenged Sniper d00d.

Idiot.
