i think the ideal light is the one that you don't have to carry around spares for.

two is one and one is none

I have one of these and it is very nice and super bright.

I also have a 1 watt dorcy 3aaa from walmart for 20 bucks, it's not bad either.

I've been feeling funny since I went in that open crypt. Not sure what it is.

well, i guess in that situation, five can be none if they're shitty enough.

by the way, i'm on your side. i was responding to this post- "I believe there are some LED torches which do perform well, but I'm doubtful that they will match the Maglite's ruggedness and availability of spare parts."

I've seen some good suggestions for LED torches but tell me, are any of them waterproof? Does that matter with LED torches?

That's a good question. Although the wonderfully machined aluminum lights have gaskets, the specs are always kinda cagey about their waterproofness... they say "water resistant" or some such.

If all you're anticipating is using one in the rain, or even the occasional accidental dunking, then the conventional ones are fine. No biggie if you have to open on up to dry it out.

But I think I know what you're asking. Will the LED mounting circuit board be instantly damaged if submersed in water? I don't know. Will that much water actually enter the gaskets - if say, the light was underwater for no more than the few seconds it would take for you to fish it out? I don't know.

There are however specifically made "diving lights" that say up to 65 feet (20 meters) for example. Do a google search waterproof luxeon. The bodies are then made of ABS plastic, yellow colored to stand out.

Both of my handhelds and headlamp are waterproof.
As far as ruggedness goes, I dropped my 4D Maglight 3 feet and broke the bulb eventhough it landed on it's ass. I have dropped my 3AAA 1 watt luxeon 2 stories and it didn't even scratch it. I have several D and a AA Mag that i'll most likely never use again.

I've been feeling funny since I went in that open crypt. Not sure what it is.

vtunderground made a tutorial for modding maglites into super-bright LED lights...

it costs like $50(flashlight body included) to make a good 3D LED maglite, I built a $75 one that would put out 4x brightness, go 150meters, and was bright for 30 hours, emitted useful light for 200 hours. thats over a week straight.

pm me and ill get you to a tutorial, or possibly build you one

as for torches, you can build a "surefire-wanna-be" for around $50, it puts out 4x the light of a 3D maglite but is as big as a 2AA maglite

Ultimate headlamp: but it's $310 U.S.. The StenLight S7. Uses: Outdoor / Rough Use / Spelunking. Head-band or other attachment methods are still pending. Designed for "standard" helmet mount so far.

I told you look to the pros and what they use & test. Be the first on your block.
