Infiltrating Edmonton

I don't mean to scream "newbie here!" But I am very much new to this; exploring. I want to start out somewhere with low security to worry about, and within the city. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you gone over the high level bridge yet on the top, or perhaps explored the train tunnel on the south side of the bridge?

No. I have no idea where to start. I've been on the High Level before, but you mean where the LRT goes? How on earth would I get in there? There are trains passing there all the time. I have heard about the tunnel under the river, do you mean that?

The top of the high level bridge used to double as a train bridge, if you start on 109st on the north end and find what is left of the old train tracks and follow them, you will find yourself above the traffic on the bridge. There is a small fence that you should be able to circumvent. Once you reach the other side on the bridge on the south side, continue on the tracks. You will find yourself just below the Garnuea theatre and at the mouth of a large train tunnel that is no longer in use. There will be a fence blocking the mouth of the tunnel, but security is low so you should have no trouble infiltrating it.
P.S. Bring your camera. T.L.

Ahahaha. All right, fair enough. I'm scared though. I'm going to ask my friend to take me, I think he's been there before. There would be nothing worse than to have a little girl like myself being beaten and mugged late at night on the tracks..

I want to get the hang of this exploring stuff, and make it on my own eventually.

Best of luck, post the pics and show us how it went. Also its a good practice to have a partner with you when you explore, I am sure all the senior explorers would agree. T.L.

lol Okay, I guess so. This will be a first time thing, and it wouldn't be the first time I would have to look down at my shoes, and say "aww shucks".

Is there any equipment you would deem necessary? And what do I wear?

Funny how you mention the HLB, TL. I had no idea there was an old train bridge on top until I happened to walk across the bridge a couple weeks back. It was icy at the time, and I feared a nice long fall, so I stayed away. I'm itching to go back and make the walk, though.

Is there any equipment you would deem necessary? And what do I wear?

I get by on a pair of those 99 cent gloves you can buy at a gas station, my Merrell boots, and a Maglite. However, depending on where you're going, the equipment requirements could range from a respirator to hip-waders.

but you mean where the LRT goes? How on earth would I get in there? There are trains passing there all the time.

If you did want to do the LRT tracks, just do it after the trains shut down at 1:30 or thereabouts.

Thanks so much Vapor. I want to check it out too, but I don't want to be killed or anything (falling into the river). I wouldn't think there would be ice now... We haven't even had much snow.

We should go... *hint hint*

Yeah I'd agree that it's safer to go with someone. I'm really into the photographic aspect of UE though, and find solo missions give me more freedom to take my time at what I do. I'll explore with other's any day of the week, but the majority of my missions have been solo.

Obviously there has to be some discretion, and it all depends on what you're comfortable with. I feel active sites are better explored alone, and sites like mines should always be explored with someone.

Good luck on your first mission!

Good advice Pickwick! I too am excited about the photographic aspects of UE, seeing how I just bought my very first digicam. (Kodak easyshare 4.0MP C330) It's a beginners camera, but hey, I'm a beginner!

And thanks for the luck I'll be needing it!

Thats an easy run, the wind up there is amazing, its fairly safe if you stay on the tracks, I am interested to see if anyone gets in the tunnel its been awhile since I've been. Here's one more for you; Go to the base of government hill near the provincial museum, walk west along the river bank and you will find a surprise. Hint; bring gumboots, a flashlight, and a respirator. And for gods sakes be careful! T.L. Cheers to Edmonchuck!
