|  | | | I was recently to Alert Bay off the North Van Island and had a little fun poking around in the old residential school. I only encountered one person there and he let my being there slide just because no one has really ever been curious enough to learn the history. I also talked to some of the locals and they told me some pretty interesting tales. One woman had attended there and told me about some rooms upstairs where they held "bad" kids prisoner and didn't feed them. The rooms are pretty baren now but the ones upstairs that I did come across had things carved in the walls from the people who were trapped there. Most of the rooms were locked.

| | | | I was just done work so I didn't have time to get my camera. It was sort of a spur the moment thing. I do plan on going back in the summer and talk to some more ppl and get some pics.

Apparently with the collapse of the lumber mill at Gold River, the down is hemorraging people and real estate is cheap and abandonments plentiful. But this could be a digression.

| | | | Ummmmm I don't know what area Alert Bay is exactly, all I know is i ferried there from Port McNeill. It's like a giant native reserve. Really nice ppl. Not a very rich area or anything. I never heard anything about a mill in the vicinity. I plan on going back as soon as possible. The camera is definitely coming with me this time. I think i'll be working there again soon anyways. One of the locals told me to come back and she'd give me a tour.

| | | | in alert bay the residential school was called st michaels, its where native children were torn from thier families to learn the ways of the "white man" they were taught to be ashamed of thier past and beaten if they used thier own language, it is a vestige of a horribly disgusting spot in our history

| | | | i'm very aware of all of that as i did my own research on it. it's the same as any other residential school only i noticed that the natives of alert bay have alot more pride for their culture than most others that i've encountered.

| | | | yeah, i was really impressed with everything. they were preparing a celebration when i was there. everyone was helping in some way or another. even the ones who weren't native seemed really understanding and adept in the culture.

| | | | I just spoke with a resident from Alert Bay this evening. She told me that they have gatherings at the school for survivors and they give this massive tour and everything. They're converting the school into a language and learning center. Better get exploring while the original stuff is still there.
