| | | What's a good place to start? < on 12/6/2005 1:48 PM >
| | | Hi, I'm new to this forum and to UE. I hope you don't get too many of these messages and are sick of them... but I was hoping you could help me find a place to start UE? I haven't done extensive stuff - I generally like creeping around empty corridors but usually give up due to lack of courage or time. I'm good at climbing over tall fences and gates, since I've left stuff in school several times and had to break in to get it. I go to university in Cambridge, UK, but right now I'm at home in a small town called Loughborough in Leicestershire. Is anyone here familiar with either of these two places? If not, where on the net can I do research and find good sites to explore? Thanks very much - this is a great forum and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better.

| | | I don't know about anything specifically in your area, but from what I hear the UK has some great abandoned asylums. Draining isn't as popular there, but the drains there are actually just as cool as all the drains in Australia (and some are cooler )

| | | my interest in UE started with abandoned houses. now i'm searching for factories and hospitals and the like. houses may seem boring to some people, but i find them to be very interesting and easy to access without getting slapped with a fine and/or jail time. just don't go and get yourself caught

| | | Softasylum - thanks for your help! I've not thought of exploring abandoned houses before, and actually there are plenty of places to look around here.
With all due respect, I'm a newbie to the forum, not to the internet ;) But if by that answer you mean there's no other way, then I'll continue looking on google. [last edit 12/6/2005 2:35 PM by aquarium - edited 1 times]

| | | Also there is a UK UE zine called section61 section61.com, in the first issue they posted up a range of UE locations by region, just the names though. I can't remember what Cambridge had, i think it had an asylum (which are always good). I'll check it out and post up the names, you'll have to google them and do the other research yourself though

| | | Don't know what to say about "where to start". It's not a hobby you just "take up" because it's based on interest; drive by a building that has been empty for years and if you get this feeling in your stomach you know you have the interest. Doing it just to do it is what it is, about as exciting as watching paint dry. But arm yourself with the history (or mystery) of a place you want to see, it doesn't matter how empty or boring it is, it's still exciting.
I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying. |

| | | If you see a cop walking a beat, ask him if he knows of any places where they find a lot of hobos or evidence of freetekno parties.

I guess. But people start things in different ways. You're probably the born-to-UE type. I'm a photographer.

| | | I'm fairly new as well, and I think the best strategy (or at least the one that worked best for me) is to take a whole Saturday and just start driving in the country. If you don't have a car, walk or bike. It might take a little time to find anything good, or anything at all, but after you've found a few places, you'll get the hang of it. The trick is to be patient.
