G'day... Does anyone know anything about the old, abandoned cabins up on Mt. Seymour (Vancouver)? I went snowshoeing today and the guide told us that years ago, there was a "cabin-building frenzy" and lots of people built up in the hills (far from the skiing areas). Obviously that's not allowed anymore and he said that most of them had been burned down around 10 years ago, so as to prevent anyone from getting hurt, but he said there were still some remnants of the cabins up there. Not that I would expect anyone to have gone near them; it seems quite a hike up to the peaks - and I don't even know if any trails go up there.

I know there used to be a cabin owned by either Scouts Canada, or just the local groups. I remember spending a weekend there once gathering firewood for our return trip in the winter later, but then I moved ad never got to go. That was close to 23 years ago though, so I have little recollection od where abouts they are on the mountain, but I know we walked down from the road, just before a switchback on the way up. I doubt they're still there this far on.

I have heard of these cabins. I will not talk about them because I don't want others to know about them. These cabins are best of if less people know about them. They have locks on the doors and are leased. If you do know about them, you may want to not tell everyone you know, due to the fact not everyone would respect them. they are not "abandoned". BC parks will ripp them down if they are abandoned (ie someone lets their lease expire). So if you do find one, it is leased. Bc parks also inspects them every year, and will ripp them down if they do not meet code after due notice, even if they are still under lease. If you do go into one, it is under lease, and if locked, is the same thing as braking into someones home. The whole north shore has many cabins. If you do know of any, IT WOULD BE WISE TO KEEP QUIET!!!

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

No worries... I was just curious, since the guide said that there were still cabins up there that weren't demolished, since they were deemed sturdy enough to remain on the mountain. He said they're still used every once in a while by those who own them, but I was just curious as to whether there were still remains of the old ones around.

One they are deemed unsafe, they remove all traces of the cabin, and another cannot be built in it's place.

I would never suggest going into one of the above-mentioned (read: leased) cabins... I was just wondering about the remains of the ones that have been torn down. I don't know if they exist - that's why I posted - the guy who works there didn't have a whole lot of information but then again, it was his first day back at Seymour.

Alrighty, thanks for the info!

Being on the exec of a prominent Vancouver-based outdoor club, I have to say BC and Alberta are littered with countless abandoned huts ranging from pre-Goldrush to relatively modern A-frame huts. If they're in parks property, they tend to get ripped apart, but just driving down by Lilloet Lake's east side, you will pass at least a few (even if you don't see them).

I can think of at least two I've accidentally discovered... intact, unvandalized, and very full of old equipment, including newspapers from the 70s.

One that intrigues me is that this outdoor club had a hut building frenzy during happier times and there are maps to huts that have not been maintained and preceded the BC Park's inspection requirements and are now rotting away.

Garibaldi is a good place to start looking too, and it's very easy to look up abandoned huts as they are often mentioned in guidebooks as "emergency shelters" which cover the range of glaciology huts, wood-stove huts, weather stations, and former ranger stations.

I didn't mean to be so rude in my above post's, but it seems (in the city at least), that if you let someone in on a Mountain secret, even if they seem well meaning, you can come back in a few months and it's trashed. I have been hiking around southern BC all my life, and come across some amazing treasures. If you have respect for the earth around you when you hike, and explore, you are bound to find some amazing things. All the north shore mountains, (and most mountains east of Vancouver, on the north side of the fraser river), have at least a few old places. Check out some of the old ski lift ruins on Hollyburn ridge, (cypress park). The old lifts will be on some of the old 60's & 70's maps. Some of the old chairs, (they only sat one person each),and some of the old towers are still there! Happy trekking and Happy hunting!

I have been to all the cabins in that area several times, and was last there about three years ago. As far as I know only the one scouts cabin was destroyed by fire about five or six years ago. I believe it was burned by the parks board because of structural safety concerns. There are still some remnants of the cabins' contents scattered around. Most of the cabins look unsafe to enter and one is, or at least was, inhabited.

The Lutheran Church owns a large 2 storey cabin on Seymour. If you go in the parking lot before the switch back that takes you to the main ski area you can see it. Head into the bush at the end of the parking lot, the trail will take you there. When not rented out, it is securely locked.

Did you go during the summer? I don't know if I'd venture around there in the snow. Then again, I have no idea what the lay of the land is around those areas.

That's neat, I've only been up there to go sledding or snowshoeing (and I've only done the latter twice in 10 years), so it's interesting to find out these kinds of details.

Shoot - I might've been able to notice more stuff had I not been helping my aunt to keep her from falling...

I've been there in the summer and winter. They are a bit difficult to find especially if you aren't familiar with the area, and it is easy to get lost there.

There is also that warming hut just in the bush from the parking area by the last switchback I believe, where that huge swing rope is.

As well as seymour, there are also cabins on grouse and a $#!T load of cabins on cypress in the cross country area. However, these cabins are owned by people who enjoy skiing or just feel like living on a mountain. How I know this? I happened to work at cypress ;) My dept. manager also lives on the mountain... some life eh? living at work??

Hmmm...I'm a student who works in an office and an elementary school, so living at work wouldn't be as much fun for me as it probably is for you... ;) Must be nice to own those cabins, though...at work we have these clients who own (and I kid you not) $5 million "winter cabins."

And by "cabins," I mean mansions.

My Dad has one of those, bought the lot back in the eighties for $60,000. I think it was appraised last year at $ 2,000,000.

Thread revival!

My father owned a lot on Bowen Island back before I was born. I believe he sold it for $20,000 so my mom and him could buy their first house.

Course, they also owned a house in Edgemont that they sold for $70,000 back in the day. And apparently the house I lived in on Caddy Rd. in Deep Cove that they sold for $148,000 is worth $900,000 now.

*Sigh* It's hardly worth pushing them down the stairs to collect my will anymore.
