However with shoes off, you can stick your toes inside the little gaps. Whatever the tread of the shoe, it's going to be too large to fit inside. Just to confirm, this is the type of fence we're talking about?

| | | I've never had a problem getting just enough grip with my toes to climb these, regardless of shoes or even whether or not the fence is wet/slippery. maybe that's just me. Also, I've found strong fingers are more useful than open toes when it comes to climbing. but don't take my word for it. 4 out of 4 monkeys disagreed with me. and they're far better at climbing than I am. | | | Ive never had any problem climbing that type of chain link fence, usually my shoes will fit far enough between the wires to climb. Its also good to jump and grab the top so you can pull yourself up if possible. Like they said before me, hands and feet, just climb it.

| | | Thanks Brent for noting that I took that picture of MY foot in the opening...But yeah Climbing has always been easy for me, but if it's too high; razor or barbed wire on the top; or angled out at the top, and its possible to unbolt (remember to scout the location first people) then yeah unbolt it.BUT!!! beware of teh consequences and watch for those breakable bolts for B&E checking.

I'm working on the Razor Wire part.

I still don't understand how you can wear those over gravel.. the soles suck on those things (normally at least) In any rate it you need to chop the fence or rip it down to get through it your either in a rush and don't care that your leaving bread crumbs or your lazy as hell... If you are going to cut anything chop the loops that connect the fence to the support poles (maybe the bottom 2-3) untill you can pull the fence up and then slide under the damn thing.. that way if it's in a populated your down lower so people are less likely to notice you and call the cops on you PLUS it keeps the fence intact so nobody is the wiser that you were ever there.. And that aside if its in the middle of nowhere and you aren't worried about people seeing you just hop the damn thing

| | | Tons of soldiers go over fences all the time, for practice. They use regular combat boots, and some have feet that are huge. It's easier 95% of the time to just climb over, and footwear really isnt a big issue. Yes you can go buy tabi's wear them once a UE, or become a ninja but its not necessary. Im about Keep It Simple and I like having one pair of footwear for most occasions. There is a book called, Urban E&E which goes into detail about how to get over any style fence, really fast and the guy who has done this, studied this, and written on it suggests sneakers work fine. Lastly for you big individuals who can't go over I am going to tell you a trick. This trick shouldnt hurt the fence and is easily fixable. Take the wire holding the fence to the polls and remove it from two adjacent polls. Now take some rope and (you can do it with one)two cheap carabineers you can get from any hardware store, or even a gas station (they should hold just fine even if they arent rated for climbing). Take a piece of rope and attach one link to the bottom of the fence and another at the very top, or on the poll itself. Pull down on the rope and the bottom half should come up like a garage door. Just tie the rope off to the carabineers, and it will stay up even for one guy. When your done release the rope, smooth out the fence(pull it back down), and reattach the metal wires that held the fence on the polls. A little practice and a multi tool makes this easy and nearly untraceable, for those of you who have issues. P.S. Did you know it takes a 5 pound bulk charge of C-4 to blow up a fence wide enough to get people through? The only other way is by making a charge to blow out each link and the poll which is difficult to make. Gotta love the things the military has to teach.

I couldn't without sports insoles (well I could but it would be really unpleasant). With good sports insoles, it's not too bad.

| | | i can't believe there is a thread on jumping a chain link fence... i have never had trouble, Tabi? those do look really uncomfortable on hard ground. but c'mon getting over a chain link fence is like walking up a flight of steps. easy as pie. if it has barbed wire it's even better because then you can grab the part of the poles its connected to. for leverage.

Ever try to vault a fence while being chased, or not wake up the eastern sea board? Although I think jester has put a little to much time into his footwear they have marked advantages, and novices could end up fucked over by rattling fences. I have been to a few places and I am sure others have as well, that fence climbing quietly with roaming guards turns into a art form.

| | | I can climb fences just fine without my tabi, and I'd quite happily match my climbing ability with most anyone here. But tabi do in fact give several advantages over most other footwear. Any comment from a person that has never used them I can't take seriously because they just don't know. I've been very acurate in my statements of their benefits as well as their downsides. From making a quieter more stable climb over a fence, to a very silent step where you can feel very well as you step, to making a climb up pretty narrow rope, they help. But, they aren't fun to run in or enjoyable to walk over things like gravel.
