Unlocking Locked Dumpsters

Our dumpster at work has a lock, but apparently you do not need the key to open it. My boss showed me how to do it, but I still do not really have the technique down. I am probably trying too hard

But anyways, our particular dumpster just has this hinged bar that goes over the lids. I have never seen any other kinds of locked dumpsters besides this kind, but I assume that there must be different varieties. All there is to it is to just pull the bar back as if there was no lock in it, and you were going to open it, but with more force, and maybe pulling up. It is really noisy to do so however. I apologize for being vague, but my boss made it look like there was nothing to it, and I did not have time to figure it out. So anyways, for these kinds of dumpsters it is very easy to bypass the locks on them. Hopefully tomorrow I will figure it out and draw some pictures to help.

Also, does anyone know of any kind of lockable dumpster other than the kind I mentioned?

this is probably a very stupid question, but... Why do you want to get into the dumpster anyway?

Those who think faith is blind are afraid of heights.

To go dumpster diving of course!

It a cool, nifty hobby that compliments UE rather well I find. There are some threads about it on the forum somewhere... I will try and find them.

It's VERY easy. Just pull the bar back to make more slack and pull the lid up. Most lids are plastic, and very easily bent. In fact, I don't think I've seen one that wasn't plastic. Stand on the side of the dumpster and push upward on the lid, midway between the hinge and the lock bar.

Lots of good stuff to be found in dumpsters, I'd suggest everyone try it. (hint: narnes and boble)

I've seen a a few types of locking mechanisms on dumpsters...

most I've seen that have a plastic cover have a standard padlock hasp pop-riveted on the plastic lid and either bolted or welded onto the metal part, usually locked with a master padlock - which if you've ever picked a lock before you know that opening w/pick is like opening w/key.

I have seen some dumpsters, specifically in apartment/housing areas that have metal covers that pivot on a big hinge toward the back of the dumpster. You will find these with welded or well-bolted hasps or steel bars that run the length of the dumpster, have a padlock on one end and are bent over on the other. Once again typically secured with a cheap padlock.

Electronics stores and the like often lock their dumpsters to keep their sales edge and prevent pilfering of electronic stuff by the general public - they either lock their dumpsters or the smash the ex-merchandise.

Hospitals, clinics, law firms etc that don't hire a shreading service will lock their dumpsters to keep data-miners from getting ahold of confidential material.

Apartment complexes and other housing with multiple people sharing a dumpster will lock dumpsters to prevent people from dumping electronics and other hazardous stuff and have to pay to have it hauled off. Some are charged by gross poundage.

Heh, yeah I had to pick my master padlock on my locker middle-school a couple of times. I think I did it with a paper clip and/or a bobby pin and it took me all class period which was rather convenient as I had lied saying my paper was in my locker; I didn't do it That is the extent of my lockpicking though... So far
