Edmonton: Immigration Hall

I just found this group and want to say hello!! I used to downtown and about 4 years ago a coworker and I went exploring the Immigration hall abandoned building, I wish I had a camera then, most of the homeless were using the building for squatting and they truly destroyed alot of the building, we saw a guy one day pushing a shopping cart of copper pipe from the building to the salvage yard next to the Yor, they set fire to the third floor and one time they brought in an oil drum and lawn chairs and set up a pit and of course they didn't vent and they all got smoke inhalation. We came across amazing hardwood floors and a marble bathroom least we believe it was marble, the walls to the toliet cubicles were stone anyway. we ventured pretty much for a couple nights. Now the building is sold and there is security there, but I'm sure we could pay off the security guy for a tour heh heh. I can find a few places downtown to venture, but other than that would like to now some more, under the uofa, the rumor of Edmonton to Vancouver.

The Immigration building as a very scary lock on the outside, as though it's meant to keep people in.

However, despite a rickety door, access wouldn't be easy- there's a security van that parks near it, though it didn't happen to be there the night Feztaa and I went to check it out.

That lock on that door is fucked up. There's one of those locks where you just slide the bar across, no key necessary... but it's on the OUTSIDE of the door. Any schmuck can walk by and unlock it from the outside without a key, so it's clearly meant for keeping people IN, not keeping people OUT. I unlocked it and the door opened partway, but not enough to actually get inside, as there's another big scary lock thing that we couldn't figure out how to open. It was pretty loose and rickety-looking but it was big and sturdy enough to keep us from getting inside. I'd be worried about somebody coming by and locking it up behind me with me inside.

It always seemed like it would be fairly easy to jump up to the fire escape on either side of the building and climb to the roof. Dunno if the roof would provide access into the building though, I doubt it.

Oh, and BTW, I haven't seen any security there the last couple times I've gone to check it out.

Well about Immigration Hall, you can go through the door facing East but thats usually where the security van is. But on the south face of the building there is a fire escape that you can climb and go through the door if it isn't locked, or a window, or on the SW corner there might be a knocked out window, it's not that bad of a drop from what I remember. Also remember it's across the street from Herb Jamieson Center and next door to Spady... (homeless shelter and drunk tank for the homeless) So don't be surpised if you run into some squatters in the building or someone to help you.
