| | | Techniques for pinpointing locations. < on 11/21/2005 3:14 AM >
| | | Here's a little help for all you balloonheads. First a caveat; a) since you are mostly computer geeks you may have already thought of this. Secondly, well there is no secondly except that maybe I should have not mentioned this. Step one ; open up Google Earth. Step two; use your browser of choice and go to "Brainygeography.com". In front of you is your state. On the other tab you got "select a state". Select it. Then click, oh let's say "hospital". Bingo. In front of you is a list of hospitals, many of which you know damn well are closed; "oh look there's broadacres sanitarium my old haunt"!Okay so thats pedestrian, there is a website listing a bunch of hospitals, some of them old junk like Broadacres! BUT the gem is that Brainy lists the coordinates of these places. Bingo. Step two: now you have your location; Cut and paste these coordinates into Google Earth and instead of messing with finding street addressees, let Google Earth "fly " you to the location. One other "caveat"; some of the locations are closed at best, at worst redeveloped. For me the "Albany county hospital for Incurables" is now the Capitol District psych center, and the Glenridge Sanatorium is now "Conifer Park (The same dude that owns the 'stead for you homestead freaks). So some of it isn't worth tracking down. Actually you'll find a ton not worth tracking down, but there's always a gem hidden someplace. Example ; a place I was moderately familiar with Pawling Sanitorium, I tracked down to the letter using this, unfortunately its now a "center for children and families" But there is promise in this technique; Got Long/Lat info? Google Earth will fly you there and then give you driving directions. And brainygeography can be a help and supply the coordinates. Click "mine" in NY. You'll;; see all of my favorite haunts, most closed, but bang you got coordinates. Don't say I never gave you anything. Or call me a dumbass for posting something obvious. Either way I love you freaks. For some reason. Not understood.
To me this is a stroke of geniues, but if it's A: so basic that any nerd here has already thought of it or B: so awesome that no Newb should see it, then someone please delete this. Brainy Geography, great resource when coupled with GE.
I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying. |

| | | Really truly awesome advice for those of us who prefer buildings over the drain environs, but you can find drains indirectly from this site, too.

| | | I've used http://www.hometownlocator.com but never looked at brainygeography.com before... As far as I can tell they are using the same data, which I'm guessing is from the USGS.

| | | Many of the places are no longer extant; but that's the beauty of it; it will show "hospitals" new, current , abandoned or no longer extant.

| | | Nice try Dukes. Dukes was trying to keep his most valued technique for pinpointing locations to himself. That's selfish and mean Dukes. Here's Dukes Dowsing to find a building.
The guy that taught Dukes everything he knows...
and another student, she's getting warm...
These guys are getting really close to finding the building they're in...
Sorry I had to let your secret out Dukes, but it's unfair to keep such a valuable resource to yourself like that...
It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf. |

It's no good unless you combine it with Google earth; flies you right to the coordinates that you copy paste, OR use Jims Divining rod. Or preferably you'd use MY divining rod. It's always serviceable, never failed me, and is a very stiff model; high performance. [last edit 11/24/2005 10:29 PM by 'Dukes - edited 1 times]

| | | Most Ontario cities provide detailed ariel maps on their websites to access. All shot in fall/spring when the leafs are off the trees and there is no snow, they come in really handy. Here is Kitcheners service as an example http://kitmaps.city.kitchener.on.ca/onpoint4/onpoint?LINK=true
