A good friend is one that bails you out of jail.
But a true friend is the guy sitting next to you in the back of the cop car saying "Man that was awesome!"

You should've heard my friend a few weeks ago, when I was attempting to show him and another buddy a site I particularly liked. One security guard stopped us and politely informed us that the grounds were closed after dark.

ONE security guard.

Cut to a few minutes later when we were working our way around the back, to my friend freaking out about getting arrested -

Friend: "There's guards all over the compound!"

That's right. Compound.

No, the guy in my av isn't actually me.

Hey Specter, what building, or kind of building are you talking about? I used to live in Azle, so I might know.

I've been doing a lot of exploring around the university after hours. Sometimes I'll step into a hall and be surprised to see half the doors are open and the rooms occupied at ungodly hours of the night. Just act like you belong there... stride down the hall confidently, nod greetings if you happen to run into someone, etc. This is easy on campus because practically any casual clothes will fit in, in fact the more you actively tried to dress the part the more you'd probably stand out... of course in other buildings it'd be a lot different!!

I find it really depends on where you are.

For instance, wandering around the nuclear reactor at my local university around 10 at night prompted a visit from campus security (who are, interestingly enough, sworn peace officers, á la the TTC Special Constables). Not even in the building, just wandering around that part of campus. We explained that one of us was enrolling in the fall and we were just getting a feel for the campus, and they left us alone.

It often depends on how plausible it is for someone to have legitimately become lost or not noticed the big "closed" sign. Being in a public area after business hours, or in a private but easily-accessable area during business hours is a lot easier to play dumb about, as it's not a stretch to believe that you were genuinely confused. Security guards deal with a _lot_ of stupid people, so missing the big "authorized employees only" sign might be believable if you claim you were looking for a bathroom or something like that.

Of course, if you're hiding behind boxes and being all high-school ninja, it's pretty obvious you know you're not supposed to be there, and you won't get much slack.
