When to wear a filter
< on 11/15/2005 11:37 PM >

I've seen many, many, posts about which filter/mask to buy; yet, none on when to wear it. If there is he possibility that a filter could be needed, should it be worn at all times? What kind of procedures are generally used by the community with masks?

At UEL we don't generally wear respirators for houses. The majority of them do not have asbestos. We will wear them then if we know in advance the place contains asbestos.

For hospitals, industrial buildings, etc. etc. of that nature, we always wear respirators. For one, they're much much more likely to contain large amounts of friable asbestos (especially if they were built before the 1970s). Also, buildings of that type particularly industrial ones like factories, often have PCBs, contaminated soil, and various other nasty chemicals/substances/waste floating around in one form or another.

EDIT: It's also worthy of note that a respirator is not foolproof. If you go tramping around in a bunch of asbestos with a mask then sure you won't breath it in. But what about all the fibres that will stick to your clothes & hair? A mask isn't worth much if you're only going to track all the bad shit back home with you and inhale it as soon as the mask's off. Just something to keep in mind...

There may not be asbestos, but there can still be mold and other hazards.

I think what he's saying is, how do you tell if the air at a site is bad? Which is a good question, and I have actually been wondering the same thing myself.

Always?

well, if the thought ever crosses your mind "This is a bad idea" then you should wear it. There are times I wish I had worn one and didn't.

I wouldn't bother to wear respirators, unless there was a posted warning. I am also a smoker so I guess it doesn't much mater to me anyway. I also explore slightly less than once a week, so any such exposures would be far less threatening than say a person whom lived or worked in it every day.

It's always a good idea to wear some kind of mask, even the paper ones, if you are going to be around any pigeon poo. That is something that will get to you a lot quicker than asbestos.

Wear a mask if there is any signs of asbestos removal as well. The company who were removing asbestos at a silo near me, did a rubbish job sealing off the contaminated area. We were able to get into the most contaminated area with no problem, or warning of what was ahead. Even a half mask respirator will not help you for long if there are high amounts of asbestos in the air (such as when asbestos is disturbed/removed). We only thought to put our masks on when we realised that all the asbestos lagging had gone from the first floor grain dryer. I've had a burning throat for a week now, which im sure was asbestos related. From what i've heard, you need a very high one-off dose to do any leathal damage, but any exposure at has its risks.

I wouldn't bother to wear respirators, unless there was a posted warning. I am also a smoker so I guess it doesn't much mater to me anyway.

Asbestos and pigeon poo are much larger risk for smokers. The asbestos fibres are much more dangerous for anyone with damaged airways (i.e. smokers, sufferers of bronchitis), as fibres embed themselves in the already damaged airways, and have a much higher chance of causing cancer. Pigeon poo can also carry very nasty bacteria, that will thrive in a damaged airway.

I wear a respirator a lot, Just to be on the safe side, lead paint, mold, asbestos etc.

And if your going in with the paper masks, don't even bother, i think the statistic shows like, 3.7% of contaminants are blocked by the general paper masks.

Surgical masks (the ones that tie on the back of your head or around the ears and are usually lined only keep out about 30% of airborne stuff like asbestos.

A nice respirator with hepa filters keeps you safe and never needs to be replaced (just get some new filters.... their not that expensive..)

I also believe they block out 99.7 or 97.9% of contaminants. Don't quote me on the exact percentage but you get the general idea of where im comming from.

A lot of sites have security to keep people out or go through extreme lengths (huge fences and other securities) to keep people out for the sole perpouse of contamination (although I know you must be exposed a lot, i'd rather be safe, besides, random moldy rooms (weve all seen 'em) make me feel like I need one anyways).

That's one reason security isnt allowed in the places as well (although mostly because of unstable buildings)

I do believe the general rule is if there's any doubt in your mind about the air quality, then you wear one. Or if you can smell it, then you wear one.

Do some research before you go in somewhere, if you find out that it's got asbestos or other air quality issues, wear a mask. If you're not sure, bring it along. (as Viper said - common sense)

You have to be careful of chemicals though...Often times you don't know what it is in there causing the smell.....we just went to thermafiber yesterday no asbestos because they made an alternative..but there was this smell and then bad tastes in all of our mouths we were only there for 45 minutes...a respirator with the wrong cartridge will concentrate the fumes and make it much worse you do have to worry about RADS. Chemical asthma has been known to happen with one time short term exposures..

One key is to limit exposure..However in some places like old schools etc with no chemicals a good P-100 filter would be good for mold and asbestos provided that it is not above 10 times the PEL set forth by OSHA/ NIOSH I'm not sure here.

That is another thing to look at what is the concentration of asbestos....

My two cents

Indeed, you have to be careful of chemicals. Make sure everything's good to go before you enter the building. I was exploring an old hospital once and like an idiot, I decided to take off my respirator to readjust the straps just outside a room containing several large drums of unknown substance. As soon as I took the respirator off the chemical smell made me cough and I had a sore throat for a couple days after.

So there I was, in this creepy old hallway...

Wore a respirator to a location that most people said was fine not to wear one at and was really glad I did. We saw TONS of asbestos insulation falling off of pipes in the nasty, wet basement. Buddy without a respirator was complaining about the smell as well as worrying about whether there was any dry asbestos to kick up and have floating around...I was chillin. Even in areas where we weren't sure there was any asbestos, we could see that the air was completely full of dust. Maybe that dust wouldn't kill me, but why not wear it just for the comfort factor?

After that, I decided I'd wear a respirator to anyplace remotely sketchy. Not sure i'm interested in houses, but if I do some I might skip the respirator, but for anywhere else I'll have it and use it.

I'm kind of new at this. Is a respirator like a gas mask? Is there anything smaller that you can just strap on your something? Those P100 things have to go in a mask type deal right? There's an old hospital I want to explore, but I'd like to wear something after what I've read here.

Always make sure if you buy surplus masks that they have the proper p-100 filters in them. Your average mask goes for 50 dollars canadian retail, although you won't die if you go a couple of times to hazardous locations so you have time to scrounge up the money.
