Sorry for bringing such an old discussion back to life, but I've been looking around for more detailed information on g-hooks and this is the closest I've found.

Are there any tutorials available for actual throwing techniques and securing / unsecuring the hook at the top when you're back down and it's time to retrieve your equipment?

normally I'd throw underhand.. but loft the hook into there you need it and yank the hell outa it for a few to make sure it's secure then as soon as one person gets up there have them loop the rope around something more secure.. if you are climbing down you can either loop the rope around something and clip it to it's self then have a thinner rope attached to the clip.. that was you can jiggle the rope and pull the other cord and lower then clip to you then unclip and pull the rest around the mount.. OR if you are feeling a little sure of yourself have the last person going to tie off a Highwayman's Hitch, that way after he is down you can have a little tug take all the rope down, BUT this knot is a pain to tie right and if you don't the guy going down the rope will be very surprised that he's falling on his ass..
