There's an old observatory down in Popson park. One night a flare was shot overhead, I think from a farmer. You can go there on guided tours during the day, so not much interesting there.

Ahh, well, Lethbridge is like totally world famous for it's over a mile long trestle! It's very cool to wander below and look up, but to climb any part of that beautiful structure would be awesome. And the other amazing thing/building is the Arthur Erickson designed University that spans across a valley, not far out of town. Please check the basement and report back...

I dream of a Sci Fi film being shot in that place when it's abandoned in 20 years.

Lethbridge also has some amazing old buildings, the downtown Kresge, (K Mart) or Woolworths? was very cool, maybe long gone, diner in the back...

Check the Galt Museum. The theatre, fire hall, back alleys, wind blowing sand, a great experience for us west coasters. Nice, nice town.

Okay, sorry I don't know nuthin about the hidden uber cool stuff, just wanted to say it's a cool town and enjoy that world famous trestle.

Back when this town was built they made tunnels that connect a few places downtown. Mostly behind locked doors and some places are sealed from what I hear. They go from the Southern Alberta Art Gallery to old city hall and a few other places.

If anyone finds an original map please post

I saw at least two or three abandoned looking buildings last time I drove through, and a steam plant access.

Are you talking about the three buildings on the west end of the train bridge?

This area is full of old mining tunnels, haven't found any open. Most are sealed with cages over wood. Can't say I'd actually like to go down some old tunnel, by know there's H2S down there.

I'm not sure but there used to be a tower at the air port here. Think it was torn down years ago.

I would definately suggest the use of at bare minimum a 10ppm H2S personal monitor, you may want to bring a scott air pack with you too. There is a huge oil and gas industry in the area and H2S settles into low open spaces. Also most of the mines in question were coal mines, and as we all know, they used canaries to detect gas as the birds would succumb to the gas at much lower concentrations. just for safety, make sure you are prepared, unconciousness from H2S can come at doses as low as 60 ppm, and if you pass out, you will be dead in about 5 mins, maybe less unless treated. treatment for H2S poisoning is also not very effective, about 95% of ppl that survive develop extreme brain damage (ie are vegetables) if their exposure lasted more than 4 mins.

The university is in what is now West Lethbridge, and if the rumor I hear is true, it was built over one of the original Galt Mines. I hear the building is sinking due to it being unstable ground, and that the entrance used to (or still is) sealed in the east side of the coulee (the valley mentioned above) somewhere underneath the university overhang. I'll look into it, I go to Lethbridge at least twice a month. I'll see what else I can dig up for old mine entries and see if I can post the locations when I qualify as a full member. If I can't access the DB, I'm sure not going to submit to it but that's just me.

This lists all active and abandoned/orphaned coal mines in alberta. It is layed out on a LSD map, just like the oil companies use, sorry no GPS coords, you need to learn to read a land survey description map.

http://www.eub.ca/...es/st45_index.aspx

Mapfile is a company that provides oilfield atlases that are laid out on an LSD grid and can generally get you within a couple of feet of where you need to be. I work in the patch and it's one of the most reliable mapping systems I've seen!

http://www.oildire...s/publications.asp I use this one for all my exploring, both professional at work to find well sites, batteries, etc, as well as documenting some of my "personal" exploring.

I think what dakotaray is trying to say is that when you finally make it to Lethbridge Team Leader, be sure to bring your canary with you. I wonder if they list that in the travel brochures for the city...

The old brewery there was pretty kick ass, but as all good things to explore, it to was torn down.
