I have a army mask I've bought a year ago in a army surplus store and I've never tested it. The information I need to know is do I have to change the filter to be protected against "bad air", does it works against asbestos, how can I tested it safely, how can I acquire information about it.
Here the picture of the mask ( it's me )

Edit: Now that I think about it, why would an army gas mask protect against asbestos anyway? Not exactly something you'd expect on the battlefield.

I would be more worried about bullets, explosion, mines.. you know, the dangerous stuff.

| | | | I'd think an army mask would be designed to filter out Mustard Gas (and the other nasty chemical warfare stuff), so I'd assume it wouldn't have a ton of trouble with Hydrogen Sulphide of Methane. Probably wouldn't help if you're simply in a low-oxygen environment though.

On the filter - Canister C2
and PCL 1986
and a serial number PCT86F001027 WT 284g
If I trust to http://www.nationa...guide/gasmasks.htm it seem my filter is a American C2 and is out do date since it's been manufacture in 1986 ; EXPIRED -If more than 10 years old
** (old filters are known to have Chromium Toxicity
** and are considered highly dangerous)

I think I wont wear my mask with this filter anymore. : /

| | | | Well, lose the original filter and buy a compatible one. According to the Homeland Security site, you can replace a C2 with an M-95 or an MSA, both of which filter 99.9% of particulates at 0.3 microns. This should be good for use against asbestos.

| | | | when they are sealed the shelf life if a while I don't know how long though, as for opened exposed filters I have heard they need to be changed every 15-30min BUT since you aren't (at least shouldn't) run across nerve gas and NBC stockpiles you more then likely won't have to replace it often at all since the main concern would be asbestos
I personally would get a fresh filter and then replace filters every month or so of heavy use? I couldn't say for sure that this would keep you safe, I am just sayin thats what I would do in your place.. Although I almost never take my mask anywhere it could be good to have

It's not about the toxicity, it's about the type of stuff the mask protect you from.
Nerve gas is.. well a gas while asbestos is a mineral.
Gas mask (the kind that protect from nerve gas) use a chemical product to neutralise the gas, but asbestos can still go through the filter.

Well I'd buy a new filter in any case and just make sure the new filter can block out asbestos, may as well not take the chances

Unless your going to a chemical plant with bad vapours, it wont help much.
Youl need to know for sure what kind of filter it uses, I bought a respirator thing it was pretty cheap and it can take a variety of different cartridges.
P-100 filters out particles, Organic Vapour cartridges filter out gasses, I think theres cartrdiges that have both, which would be best.
