| | | When the cops come and they freak out and stuff... is it a good idea to play dumb and just be like: "I didn't know"?

| | | I've fallen back on 'playing dumb' when I can't think of anything better (like, when I run into someone very unexpectedly and I have to quickly explain my presence). Or, when my gf starts grilling me about where I've been all day.

| | | As Pleiades said, it all depends on the circumstances. Usually playing dumb doesn't work especially if there's a big sign saying "NO trespassing" and they're plastered all over the place. Now, if you got in through a back entrance that didn't have said signs, then yes saying "I didn't know" would work. Playing dumb does take a lot of skill. I'd usually make up a story first before going on playing dumb. You're an intelligent story, it's easier to make up something than play dumb.

| | | if you act dumb, it can backfire on you and you can be in worse trouble then you would have been, such as the No Tresspassing thing axle said...best thing to do is either have a damn good story made up beforehand (ie: i need pics for a school project) or just dont get caught

| | | Heh, you could always literarily act dumb and pretend you can't speak. But seriously, sometimes truth works better than fiction, if you explain that you just love being immersed in the history of old buildings, you might be better off than coming up with a suspicious story on the fly.

School project one, that's my usual explanation. I also use the "I'm a photographer for a real estate company looking at purchasing closed/abandoned buildings.

| | | It all depends. The more restricted the area the less likely this excuse will work. I always liked the "playing gay" excuse! I heard it mentioned here a while back, just saying you were trying to be with your "lover" someplace very private. Of course this could backfire too, like if you were anywhere in the South! | | | Playing dumb might work if there are no signs to the contrary, but you should know that "not knowing" isn't a valid excuse legally, so if they're of a mind to charge you, they're gonna.

Never had to use it, but I'd actually planned on a similar excuse once, when exploring something on a college campus with a couple other people during the summer. "There are dorms around here, right?" I asked. "If we're stopped, say we're heading to an S&M party in one of the dorms, but we don't know the address." "An S&M party!?" "How else are you going to explain the ropes, flashlights, and respirators?" "Kinky. I like it." I suppose one could carry a couple condoms as credibility props... or a special flashlight, depending on your plumbing and preferences... But please, no tagging buildings with the edible paint.

| | | This one works really good, (although if you have a bunch of equiptment it probably won't) I was exploring this old junk yard when the cops showed up. (It really could have turned out bad for me sence the guy that owned the yard just got busted for cooking meth out there and they thought thats what I was doing out there) I told them my dog jumped out of my car and took off running and that I was just looking for her. I even showed the cop a picture of my dog! I actually felt kinda bad cause these cops stuck around for almost an hour helping me look for my dog! And of course that excuse worked really good when I came back later. I was able to get a few good pics before the cops came back. Hahaha!

| | | What works for me is that I'm just there to take pics. I've even showed them the pics on the camera. Have also told them I like the history and the archectecture of the building. Works for me.

| | | I've never been caught yet. But I work for a disposal company and we have an extensive rear lot full of worn out and new garbage dumpsters. One time on the night shift I was working near the metal shop when I heard something in the back lot. I went back there to see if maybe some more hobos had moved in and I saw some younger looker teens (most likely 13-14) and I asked them what they were doing here. They quickly said they had just wandered in here and were on a UE excursion. I bought the story for a second until I saw the can of spray in one of the kids hands as he jammed it into his back pack. They saw me notice the can and ran off... Its kids like that that give UE a bad name when its now being used as an excuse for sheer vandalism

| | | Bullshitting the cops is one thing. They're paid to listen/deal with a certain amount of bullshit. Bullshitting your g/f is an amateur mistake that will only get you killed. "Where were you all day?" 1) "Um...I dunno." 2) "With KublaKhan." 3) "I dunno." 4) "Out." These are likely the best answers you can come up with on the spot. Your g/f ain't gonna buy any of them. A cop might. PS...for Christ's sake...don't tell her you were with me. Cuz I told mine that I was with you. (You got drunk and I had to help you sober up and if that meant drinking your beer...HEY MAN...THAT's WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR). ...Oh yeah. You owe me a beer.
