| | Tactical Vests < on 1/26/2003 11:18 PM >
| | | After a few small night-time recon missions to a UE location which I will not disclose, my friends (beginner UEs, but very knowledgeable) and I came to the conclusion that backbacks aren't that comfortable.
An idea came to mind: tactical vests. At first we thought of the BlackHawk vests, but those are $150 and the idea went out the window. But then I found Load Beaving Vests for M-16s and decided to buy one ($30). Needless to say, it proved very useful on the last mission (first actual mission to the location). The M-16 magazine pockets (four big ones and two small ones) fit tools very well (screw drivers, etc). The camera bag I have attached perfectly to the nylon straps that surround the bottom of the vest and didn't bother me one bit. AA maglit belt holsters attached well onto the same straps up front and my 3 D-cell maglit slipped right into the straps and never fell out even during running and jumping. FRS radios (note: make sure you have ear buds, they help a lot) clipped onto the shoulder part of the vest, making it easy to talk.
I would recommend this for anyone doing night-time UE'ing, even though it makes you look worse than you could if you didn't have it, it's a useful piece of gear. Make sure you have a jacket over you while you're walking to the location, and have someone pick it up (we had surveillance doing a constant look out for us and would radio us whenever someone walked by).
Search eBay for "M-16 Load Bearing Vest" -- that's the one I got.

| | | This probably brings up a good discussion about whether tactical vests are better than 'plainclothes'. For example, if a cop stops you in black- it is tough to get outta that one. If you are in plainclothes (dark jeans, dark coat) you can probably explain your way out.

| | | He was just wearing the mask to not show his face to everyone on the site. Jeez, relax, he's not a Wraith... It's already established that the stuff is great for hiding, but not great for explaining in the event of being caught... Reduxzero (drains of my city) in Edmonton uses a tactical vest in drains, but nobody else I know of does...

| | | I know that he once did, as he came to Ontario and we took him exploring. There is a base just outside Barrie, you see. Poor bastard saw blood the first place we went. :/
As far as the vests go, they tend to look a bit out of place in suburban Ontario, however a nice fishing vest or the like can do worlds for your back in a tiny drain. So I am told anyways. I am usually short enough to carry a backpack with no problems. 8D

| | | I wear a photographer's vest. Here in hot, sunny Florida it's become de regeur for those carrying guns to wear a "covering garment". Available at Banana Republic and some other places (Cabela's Catalog). Also known as a "Forager's Vest" or "Adventurer's Vest". They come in tan, khaki, OD Green, Black, and even maroon, now.
(It should be noted that while I wear the VEST exploring, I usually don't wear the gun. Another post thread explains why in long, drawn-out, boring detail.)
Can be combined with stylish Khaki's and deck shoes to make you look preppy and non-threatening, unlike yours truly, who wears a black "Got SoW?" T-shirt and black BDU's and combat boots.
But hey, that's me.

| | | Don't USUALLY carry the gun, while exploring? Why even carry it at all?? Worried that some hobo is going to ambush you or somthing...? That would be easy to explain. Caught exploring in some old building, okay... So you might get a ticket. Then the cops find a Glock 9mm in your vest. Have fun trying to explain THAT...

| | | As I said before, my reasoning is in another post thread "packin' heat" and your commentary aside, I believe my choice on whether or not to go armed is solidly based upon experience and accurate (not emotional) assessment of other relevant factors.
So please, before you go speculating on my reasoning, do please read that other thread. It's all there.

| | | The only problem I've ever seen with vests is the possibility of crushing everything you have in them if you have to duck on a floor or having to crawl under something on your stomach. Mainly I'm just concerned about cameras, I guess. Backpacks and shoulder bags do hold a lot more though, and they're easier to take on and off, should the need arise. Overall, I prefer a shoulder bag with the strap across my chest.

| | | I use a small North Face backpack designed for a 2 litre camel bak bladder. I can fit a few 3D maglites, the bladder, gloves, radio, keys, wallet, mask, cell phone, ect. and the pack is very thin. It is easy to remove, it looks like a regular backpack, the straps allow me to clip my radio. It works great, MEC carries similar designs at better prices then North Face, and BlackHawk has some very good small packs as well. Regular back packs are too bulky and annoying, the vests look a little bit out of the ordinary for me.

| | | So far all I have carried with me is my Swiss Army Knife (doesn't Switzerland have a militia?), my 2AA Maglight, and my camera bag, slung across my shoulder. I just wear my Pully Wooly sweater, dark pants, tennis-shoes, and maybe a black beanie. I am thinking of getting a fishing-vest type thing, because I would personally wear that to school or around town, and it has lots of pockets for anything I may need. If I was on an overnight mission or something that would need rope climbing or something I would take a backpack, but other than that I don't see the need for MREs and a mortar launcher to poke around old buildings...
