| | | I've had a 2AA Minimag that I've been using for years. The other day, it just wouldn't turn on, so I tried replacing batteries and that didn't work. I've also put in a new bulb and still it won't work. If it twist it on, nothing happens, but if I hit it against my palm or whatever while its "on", it'll light up for a second. I assume something in there's loose and/or not making the right connection. I've already looked at it without complete disassembly (I think you need a special tool for that) and everything looks fine. Any ideas what this could be or how to fix it? I really don't want to have to waste $15 on a new one, (or waste time and money on shipping to Mag Instruments for repair) [last edit 10/11/2005 2:07 AM by Capone - edited 1 times]

| | | I've killed 2 aa mags this way. http://www.orderoutdoors.com/maasr.htm#9 That site gives a good description of how to fix it using the special tool you referred to. I've never bothered to fix one but it doesn't look to hard.

| | | You don't need the 'special tool'. To take it apart, just pop the little black plastic "do not remove" collar off with a knife blade. To re-assemble, use the batteries to help push the switch guts (plastic disk with two small metal tabs) back into place. Works for me. Just pay attention to how it goes together and be careful not to lose the little metal tabs (I've done that before)! The problem is probably corrosion on one of the contacts... I'd take it apart, and take a fine sandpaper to the top of the tailcap spring, and the two metal tabs in the switch guts. Also make sure that the threads are clean.

Thanks! I was able to get the tab off with a knife (I thought of this before but I was afraid of breaking it) and after a bit of sanding it's back to working order.

The exact same thing happened to my 4-D maglite in the middle of a drain, after I'd dropped it in some (very shallow) water. I thought my batteries had gone out, but I'd forgotten extras. It sucks walking in pitch blackness, especially in a backbreaker. I eventually learned to slap it to make it work, but now it seems to have righted itself.

| | | When you're reassembling that bad boy, make sure to grease up your threads and seals with an o-ring safe lubricant, and take your batteries out if you're not going to be using it for a while. I do that every time I change my bulbs, and I've never had a problem with corrosion.
