To bring or not to bring: weapons
< on 10/4/2005 11:31 PM >

While I was gathering my gear for my most recent outing I had trouble deciding if I wanted to bring along my knife or not. I mean, its good to have it in case you need it, but if you have it you will use it. And the last thing I need is to kill someone. Anyone else ever think of this? Any suggestions/tips?

Theres a big post somewhere on the forums about bringing weapons while UE'ing and the opinions were mixed.
I think it depends where you will be UE'ing when you decide wheter or not to bring a weapon. For example, if youre going to an abandonned factory close to a residential area, it might be in your best interest to bring some sort of protection, but if you're going to be exploring on someones land in the middle of nowhere i dont think its needed. But for me, no matter where i go i bring my swiss army knife. Theyre handy, have many tools on them, can be used to protect your self, and cops dont seem to mind them. I've been searched by cops and when they went thro my pockets they found it, then gave it right back to me, even though they were still searching me and some friends.
If you think the area you're going to might be dangerous, then bring something, if not do what you think is best.

A knife is a tool, tools make life easier.. it's only a weapon if you use it as such

I gotta agree....

Depends where you're going.

I always bring a knife just because there's lots of uses for one...

I'm not sure I'd bring anything as extreme as a firearm, but anything less than that would make sense to me.

Just make sure you don't get stabbed with your own knife man. Make sure your in control if anything goes down and they don't get the knife away from you, then yer fucked.

I carry a pocket knife everywhere, it's not a weapon. I feel strongly about weapons and injuring people using them.

But as mentioned before, a weapon is only a weapon until it is used as such.

I kind of just consider my (3D)maglite could be an effective bludgeoning weapon if totally necessary, I lost my swiss army knife a while ago and havent gotten around to getting a new one. My roomate who I go UE-ing with brings our 'trusty' (read: piece of shit) Nexxtach multitool. but then he's also a mid-degree black belt(I don't remember what degree specifically he said) so I don't worry too much about needing weapons. it's more important I think to stay undetected in the first place. then you've got the upper hand and should be able to detect any threats before they detect you.

Thanks for the opinions =). I have a multitool I could carry around with me and leave my knife at home. I was thinking about getting pepper spray(is it even legal in New York?) and I imagine my mag-lite could make some hurting if it had to.

In the U.K. its just not an option really, even a swiss army knife can land you in trouble. A maglite is usually all thats needed, though I have never had any problems whilst out and about so I wouldnt recommend any weapon! I read somewhere 'only carry the weapon that you can do the time for' which seemed to make sense.

If you feel that you need to bring a weapon along to a location for protection I'd be asking myself serious questions as to whether I should even be going to that location. I don't count maglites or multi-tools as weapons so I bring them along, but if they want to the police can count them as such. I don't think they're an especially good idea in general, unless you're doing UE in Afghanistan, but then you've probably got other problems...

I have never had the need to bring a weapon to any location. Your mouth, and your brain, are your best weapons. If you bring a weapon into the fold, that will just escalate the situation, and can end badly.

i agree with this, weapons only create more problems
if you pull out a weapon on someone you better be prepared to use it
coz if you dont theres a good chance theyl use it on you

I generally bring a 4D Mag lite with me. I will occasionally bring a swiss army knife or leatherman with, but never anything past that.
Another thing that might be somewhat effective if it was very dark is a GOOD camera flash. You know how hard it is to see things after someone takes a flash picture of you using a bright flash? Well, that just might give you enough advantage if you needed to fight or run.

If you are encountered by someone who posses a weapon you'd be glad to have something to back you up. Although, those who can not handle a run in with anyone, armed or not, and will pull out their weapon at any given oportunity shouldn't carry a weapon with them, they'll just cause more harm then in the first place.

my best weapon has always been my daggermouth.... my tongue is the best defence and offence. bring a knife for the utility of it but bring a weapon and why even bother with UE? Just go to the bar, drink and explore the intricate beauty of the fists you discover.

It seems you've just been looking with your eyes closed.

You pretty much nailed it.

If you are not mentally prepared to defend yourself practice running. Its all about preparedness and mind set. You have to remember the poo can hit the fan at a Walmart parking lot as easily as it can the worst neighborhood you can think of. You don't bring tools to defend yourself with the intention of using them. You bring them in case you need them. Just like T.P. and extra batteries. Preparedness and awareness. Mindset.

Carrying any dedicated weapon is a very personal choice and I wouldn't push someone one way or the other.

My take on it is if some decides to assault me they forfit their human right not to be assaulted in return. I'll escalate the measure of force as I see fit.

And just remember for the sake of charges, even if you don't think of something as a weapon a cop can charge you for it (D cell maglites, steel toed boots, 2X4...) But I would assume you would have to be a complete ass to the cop in order for them to do that, or some kind of assault that they were called on.. And just because you don't use it doesn't mean its not a weapon to them.. Check your local/state laws, know what you are doing illegal before you do it (not that I am saying don't, but at least realize what your doing)
But in general I wouldn't go anywhere without a multitool or a good serrated knife, the uses for such tools just list on and on (Multitools will look slightly more harmless if your worried about it)..

Before I start, IANAL. My legal work is purely a hobby, not my trade. This post is for general informational purposes only. I cannot give you legal advice. If you require legal advice, you should retain a lawyer who can advise you on your particular situation.
</DISCLAIMER>

I don't know about a lot of the US laws, but in Canada, many of our criminal laws require the police and courts to make a judgement about your intent. That is, how you behave, or other circumstances surrounding your situation can make the difference between whether other actions are construed as criminal or not.

A good example of this that could apply to UE scenario are our laws on Forcible Entry (s. 72 C.C.C.).

72. (1) A person commits forcible entry when that person enters real property that is in the actual and peaceable possession of another in a manner that is likely to cause a breach of the peace or reasonable apprehension of a breach of the peace.

In this sort of situation, if you were found with weapons on your person, or tools of destruction, they may "reasonably apprehend" that you intended or were likely to breach the peace, whether or not you were actually doing so.

Regarding the questions of weapons, legally speaking a weapon is often defined by how you use it. Again from the Criminal Code:

"weapon" means any thing used, designed to be used or intended for use
(a) in causing death or injury to any person, or
(b) for the purpose of threatening or intimidating any person
and, without restricting the generality of the foregoing, includes a firearm;

So a pocket knife, maglite, or wrench isn't automatically considered a weapon simply by possessing it. In fact, being involved in UE could serve to strengthen any argument that those items were not intended for use as weapons. However, if you're walking through an abandoned building with a baseball bat, a reasonable inference could be made that you intended to use it as a weapon.

The long and the short of it is is, from a legal standpoint, if you are carrying something that could be used as a weapon, and you don't have a valid excuse for carrying it, don't get caught

Right on Cyber Shoe and Pravus. I should have mentioned something to the same effect.

I don't know anything about Canadian law, so thanks for chiming in. Here in the US the laws change so much from state to state that you really have to be an amature lawyer to get by.
