| | Portability! :S < on 9/24/2005 7:06 AM >
| | | Hey, I'm new here (EUR, and the city) you can read my first post int he main forum, but anyways, I've a pressing concern, and it is this: I have bruises on the back of my knee! from what? from these damn cargo pockets being too low and having my camera constantly swinging about and banging the back of my knee. Ok, I've got 3 cameras, and I do actually have a proper bag for them. But for infiltration purposes I like to keep mobility high and weight low. So I generally only bring my digital camera with a pocket tripod and a spare battery. It's an Olympus C5060, so it's definitely not the most compact digital camera out there. I tend to keep it in the aforementioned cargo pockets of my work/exploring pants. because it is the only pocket that will safely hold it (especially in cases where climbing is involved) but there is that one caveat: the bruises. Unless I keep holding my pants so the camera doesn't swing at every step, things just get very uncomfortable. This is also a major concern because in the event that I may have to run for it, that would definitely make running a lot harder, and seriously have an affect on my sprinting . Oh, the other problem is that I can only then bring my pocket tripod. Which just sucks for various reasons (always worms eye view! not very stable!). So I just wanted to ask: what do other UER photographers use to carry their gear? I don't really want to have to take a backpack on infiltration missions because it's somewhat of a mobility hinderance when it comes to jumping fences and/or entering tight spaces. I have 2 smaller bags that I can probably loop a belt through and carry that way. Does anyone do that? how is it for mobility, comfort, camera safety? I would like to be able to bring along my full sized tripod but it seems like too much baggage for most outings. Does anyone know of maybe some very compact camera backpacks? with tripod straps? I don't know, maybe I should just find better pants that have pockets higher up.

| | | Well my camera isn't exactly the most portable either, a Minolta X-7A SLR which on it's own is rather small but I also have a motor drive 1 unit on it What I use is an old load bearing vest I picked up at an Army surplus store, there are plenty in Toronto if you want to know, PM me, and I can give you an address of a good one. So with the vest and the pouches i can carry accessories with little problem in a light easy to access way. The camera itself has a large enough strap that I can sling it across like a bag, when I'm moving into tight spaces I'll remove the lens and leave the body cap on to protect the lens from damage.

| | | I use a Lowepro backpack. It's one of the daypack ones so it's not huge, but it holds a Holga, a Pentax K1000 with two lenses, a Digital Rebel, and a Polaroid 600 or a TLR. Also it has room for my CD player, a couple of CDS, film, lens papers/filters, cable release, batteries, a mini tripod, some pens and paper and a regular tripod (on the loop). Pretty awesome for a $90 CAD bag.
http://www.lowepro...o_Trekker_200.aspx I think I've packed it quite well. ;) [last edit 9/24/2005 10:19 PM by nd31 - edited 2 times]

yeah wow, you've definitely got it packed quite well, looks like a decent pack for that price. but I still think of backpacks as a bit of a hinderance. I think I have seen straps made by manfrotto for their tripods so they can be carried on the back, like a rifle would be. but I've never seen them in stores, have you? or would you know of any online stores that might have that kind of thing? I'm thinking just looping my topload lowepro bag on my belt to carry a camera in, but it would be nice to have the bigger tripod along. the tactical netting (army vest) idea someone else mentioned seems a little conspicuous. thought maybe if it was brought in a backpack, then put it on just before entering and leave the empty backpack hidden somewhere along the escape route for afterwards. *shrugs* am I thinking too cautiously? I just think people would ask questions if I was on the metro wearing a tactical vest from a surplus store, also dressed very dark and with steel toed workboots to match.

nice, that actually looks not bad. a heck of a lot more comfortable than the pocket i've been using. but not obstructing for climbing and running. I've been meaning to get to mec to find a nice bag for this very reason.

| | | Last time I explored a building near Minneapolis on campus I brought my full sized tripod to take some roof shots of the skyline, and ended up just shoving one of the legs through my belt right by the small of my back - it wasn't the most comfortable and it was a pain in the ass to have the tripod with me but it did yield some good shots. I wasn't too worried about having to make a break and run for it at this location though - it was pretty tame. It wasn't too bad climbing in this fashion either. Just a thought ~grit.

| | | Get a hiking/walking pack. They are very small (about a quarter size of a regular backpack) and you can strap them on so they don't move around. They have enough room for multiple cameras and equipment. I usually carry a Canon Powershot, collapsible tripod, two flashlights, two glowsticks, extra batteries, tools, rain poncho, gloves, headlamp, and rope. I also comes with a built-in (and removable) water pouch/tube that fits about 2 liters of water. With all this, the pack stands about half a foot off my back so that I can get into most places without having to take it off. When I do have to, it fits wherever I can fit. I think these packs are ideal for UE/RE. They seem custom-designed for this type of thing. Also, at $12 (Walmart) they're pretty affordable. The compartments are handy and actually saved my camera when I fell into waist-deep water. Highly recommended.

| | | The pack is very similar to this one: The Walmart one is a bit smaller and triangular but it's the same idea.

| | | I use a Camelbak Cloud Walker, stuffed to the brim. It's a backpack, but has a very low profile. It's small enough that I can climb through manholes with it on, which is quite a feat, considering my dimensions. (I'm BIG) Also, you can use a gas mask bag. The have a single shoulder strap and have a waist belt, to keep them from bouncing. The ones I have also have hard pieces of plastic sewn into the sides, which offers some protection to its contents. I got two of them for ten bucks on eBay.

Yeah...the pic posted above is actually one of the Camelbak line. It's true...the pic makes it look a lot bigger than it is. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find this make of bag for less than $40, which seems excessive for something that'll be dragged around and beat up.
