| | | | grappling hooks? < on 9/19/2005 2:35 AM >
| | | I am attempting a building that is extremely secure on the first level, but one floor up there are empty, boardless windows. I can't see any way to climb up. I've seen a few people mention grappling hooks as a way to ascend walls and buildings. Is this really an option that many of you use? If so, what are the key points to using one?

| | | Personally it just screams "wannabe-ninja" to me, and I'd probably end up having a 2x6 plank accidently lean up against the building or some other ingenius McGuyver-rig to get me in there.

I thought the same thing up till a few months ago, but a quickly-made grappling hook came in very handy while trying to enter a nearly sealed building with a small group a while back. If you're going to build or buy one, it doesn't have to be big, and you don't need to carry it around with you everywhere you go. quick EDIT: memory_machine, you've got the single coolest avatar on any board anywhere. Personally it just screams "I'm going to get in where most people won't" to me. Now i've use all manner of improvised climbing help (boards, pipes, broken bed frames, you name it) but it depends on the place. If you can't end up leaving something there that is a tell tale sign that *somebody climbed up this shit* then a grappling hook is a far better idea. People that have never used them really don't know how handy they can be...

| | | I saw this link this morning on another website. It made me chuckle when I read the title. I doubt it'll be in our hands shortly but its nice to know the technology is finally here. Its got the rocket, the grapple, the winch, everything, and its light! If anyone wants to buy one for me, I'll be glad to test it for you. Let me take the risk so that you dont have to worry. Enjoy! <a href="http://www.t....co.uk/newspaper/0,,176-1785933,00.html"target="_blank">text Pops Open in new Window</a> Now off to build one for myself... or if it doesnt pop here's the addy.. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,176-1785933,00.html

| | | theres a pretty cool one that I didn't bother posting that has CO2 to propel it and it's got a gas powered launcher, it's made to launch rescue and mooring lines from and between boats.. pretty cool, but the whole rig costs like 3k... it has hook and floatable buoys (for the rescue lines for overboard sailors) http://www.securit...grapplinghook.html (yay found the link) http://www.trgear.....php/products_id/4 (and I found the other one that was cool, at least in design) [last edit 9/21/2005 2:14 AM by Pravus - edited 2 times]

| | | Sorry to bring this one back from the dead, but I had to reply. I actually had to use a grappling hook last night to get up to the second floor of a building with a big railing in the window. It took about four tries, but once it was up, it was very snug against the railing. I climbed up and then tied it on to make if safer for my buddy. It was basically a canoe anchor, but it worked perfectly. Once I climbed down my friend and I pulled and wiggled the rope until the hook came flying down and just about lodged itself in my friend's head. So wear a helmet.

| | | My experience with grappling hooks is bad. Made a good one by copying a commercial design. Used some of my high quality (and expensive) reverse twist rappeling line, took it out to a site, threw it up set the hook and started climbing. About 15 feet off the ground, the hook tore the building framework loose inside, dropping me to the ground. As I lay there, the hook and a chunk of the building interior came hurtling down and center punched me. Moral: Wonderful tool, but you can never really be sure what its hooked on inside. If I'd been 15 feet higher, it might have been fatal. Lets be careful otu there.
I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread. |

| | | Agreed. It was mostly fluke that it hooked on the rail so well, but it got me up to the top. And I was the only person who climbed it unsafely, it was really secure once I got up to let my buddy and the gear up. The best way to make sure the hook stays is to tug it and wiggle it so it settles on the target, then give it a couple tugs with your entire bodyweight. Then, make sure you keep the weight on the rope nice and constant, don't bounce around while you're climbing. And obviously, keep your weight down. Only carry up what you have to.

| | | well im going to go try out a grappling hook set up tomorrow, i used a rope tie-down winch for holding things down in the back of my truck and i made a system so i can pull one rope and i go up, basically its a plastic/metal ascender, ive got it tied into my climbing harness. oh yea by the way, the hook is a collapsible one , does any one have any cons about those?

Sure.. they are weaker by design.. when you make thing collapsible you will be forced to put in either hinges or take away from material.. so yes they will be weaker then a solid one.. but they should carry well more then your weight.. We have bent up the hell outa ours but we just bend it back into shape Also they aren't 'that' risky if you check over things, make sure your anchored into something solid.. If you blindly throw the hook into a mess of steel and shoot up the rope, expect to fall.. after you attach the hook give the rope a couple a yanks, then put your body weight into it jump on that thing make sure you test what your climbing on before you go up it.. But thats common sence, not faulty hooks
