Abandoned mining town Bankhead Alberta

Just a few pictures to post since I cannot creat locations. More to come of Bankhead and of an intact yet completely abandoned town in Southern Saskatchewan.

Bankhead was a coal mining town around the turn of the centry it is located about 15KM from Banff. It was closed in about the 1920's when the need for coal declined due to an abundance on the market and the fact it was located in an area that had been designated national park. All the buildings were either moved to Banff or Calgary or demolished and the mine entrances are filled. Now all that is left is foundations, including some with large walls intact, the jailhouse has the all concrete cell building intact, the lamp house is largely intact but the walls are tipping over. I have photographed this location extensively about a half dozen times, more to come.

Holy Trinity Church - Bankhead, Alberta

Bankhead RCMP Barracks and Jail
The bars between the cells have been sawed out between the two cells, in one cell there is an old rusty bed frame.

I explored Bankhead about 5 years ago, more with an eye for the mines.

If you are in the area and want something really neat, check out the monarch mines near field. World class UE site. I have been told by an action squad member he liked the mines better then the MN labyrinth.

We have been exploring and mapping them for over 5 years now.

There is a group expo planned for Nivelo's visit in October. Anyone is welcome to join in.

If you ever come to Calgary then email Satan@uea.ca and you'll be made welcome, taken to locations and given free accommodation. We'll help save you the $$$ you spend on the flight over here :)

There's a similar "town" not too far out of Jasper. I'm at a loss for the name of it right now but its right off the highway though completely concealed by trees. I'll see if I can't remember what it is. I remember seeing something about ruins in a tourist map so I asked a ranger about it and low and behold he started highlighting all sorts of spots on my map. It never hurts to ask.

Kay,

Is it called either Geikie or Jasper House? I will try to find out what I can about it.
