Would have been about '89, I did the first stretch of the train tunnel under Burnaby, from the South end. Had to wait out a train going through, there is an alcove a ways in where you can hide behind a big switchbox. When trains go through, the whole tunnel is lit up with overhead light bulbs. The train actually stopped while I was waiting, so by the time it had gone and I had worked up the nerve to continue, it was time I had to leave for home.

The absolutely very best sign I ever saw was on the entrance, said...

DO NOT ENTER
RISK OF DEATH

I did the whole Burnaby tunnel from South to North lastnight. Three trains in total went through, scared the shite outta me. Anyways, the tunnel did not light up at all when the trains came. There are some great tags near the south entrance, for about 50m. There are huge numbers or mice and rats in there. We tried to enter from the North, but some dude on a loudspeaker (watching us with the cameras I think) said "DO NOT ENTER TUNNEL, TRAIN COMING". He must have been the dude who raises and lowers the rail bridge next to Second Narrows. It was a cool tunnel... 4.5km long and 45m deep. Lots of alcoves. Here is the target area...

We ended up finding entries by the various yellow boxes. The easiest way was of course the street-level crossing in the bottom left yellow square.

Here's the exit point. We tried to insert here, but there are cameras and someone monitors them, obviously. Also, the underside of the Second Narrows bridge looks cool, anyone scaled it?
We parked the second truck up where the lower yellow line is, next to "Montrose Park". The service road is gated, can't get close on wheels.

Thanks Team Leader. We call ourselves "Cobra UE Vancouver", just out to have some fun. I will post the pics soon. I'm pretty new at this - I never knew how large the UE community was! I have 2 more very special missions for our team in the next few weeks. One of them will be quite HIGH profile

Cheers!

There's a tunnel under gastown. It's called storyeum and it costs 20 bucks.

http://storyeum.co.../storyeum_map.html

Now that I think of it. It's more like a touristy subterranean parking garage.

Kamala, that kind of thing scares me a little, the train thing. I like to drop by the north portal occasionally to watch the trains come out. Must have been a buzz. What was that storyeum like Tunnelbug? N.

Well, I mean, we went there thinking it would be some cool utility tunnel built by the Chinese, or some other cool tunnel, going down to the water. We were disappointed when the tour guide told us that it was just a converted subterranean parking garage.

It was fun to learn about B.C.'s history though, and it's quite entertaining. Reminds me of the times back in Primary School, when we had live actors come to perform for us.

Nobody,

We scoped it for a few hours on the North end (thought to make the insertion there)... but security was tight. The whole time, not one train. Of course when we were about 1/4 the way in coming from the South, we had many trains. FAST trains. I can't wait to post the pics, waiting on Cobra UE Co-founder Krusty to email the pics (hear that, Krusty?)...

Our first official mission as Cobra UE Vancouver - Burnaby CN Rail Tunnel. Present were: Krusty (he took the pics), Kamala (me!), Mr. Black, Mr. Pink, and Supervisor.

This is the South portal to the tunnel (check out the map posted before)... this is a descent into mouse heaven....

More images will be uploaded later...

Some more pics from the tunnel mission. Notice the closeup of this tagging near the South portal.. you can see a DOOR! Where does this door go?

The view when we emerged from the North portal (L), us leaving CN territory (R):

This is where we left our rides (L), here;s Krusty celebrating after a long underground hike (R)

There is also a tunnel from the Main police station under cordova street to the court house sealed up now. They use to bring the prisoners down from the jail and transport them through the tunnel to court.

He's talking about the Provincial Courthouse at 222 Main Street. The present day Art Gallery is the old court building that was replaced by the one down the steet at 800 Smithe St.

"We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." -George Orwell

Rest in peace, my pal Mowgli - the best dog there ever was.
