Another n00b here, in Denver. Already working on the L3, just donated. Here's to the cause.

I've done a few drains over the years, in California and when I was living up in Fort Collins, but nothing that I would consider a serious endeavour.. yet. As such, anybody know of good places to sneak in the Denver metro area? I saw mention of CCU and a church on Conifer Road in other threads, but am looking for something a little more downtown-ish. My initial goal getting into UE is to see what the hell is under all those skyscrapers, aside from parking spaces.

Was a meet-up ever established?

Speak of the GF and she appears.....kind of like the devil, but different. LOL

AlphaWolf, are you talking about the little ghost town that has the building with a giant peace sign on the roof? If not....then you're mentioning something I don't know about and if that's the case....guess where we're going Daghita.

That's if anything is still there. I was talking to my boss and he said a lot of Oh My God road has been paved. Grrrr.

I don't recall seeing any Peace signs on any buildings but I could have missed that. The ghost town I'm thinking of is still pretty well intact (or it was last time I was there). There were several large mining buildings. Some cabins, a couple of dynamite bunkers, and a house of ill repute that was still in pretty good shape. There was one room in particular that had a bunch of pictures of old dolls cut out of old catalogs and glued all over the walls. I guess it made the girl who worked in that room feel more at home? It was a pretty erie place. As you come out of the cat house and look off to your right you can see the big mining trucks off in the distance tearing the top of the mountain off. That whole area down there has a lot of old mining ruins. It makes a fun drive. I was up on the Oh My God Road about six weeks ago and it was still dirt. So they're paving it huh! That's Colorado for you! If it's old, tear it down! If we can commercialise it and make money on it, pave it over! If they do pave it that would suck! It will just become busy and crowded like a lot of the other places that used to be cool in the mountains!

Hey Conscience, Welcome to the club! Yes, I too have been looking for the Holy Grail of tunnels under downtown Denver. I know there are steam tunnels down there. I know there are tunnels running from the State Capitol out to some of the apartment houses in Capitol Hill. They used to be houses of prostitution and the politicians would use these tunnels to go get a quickie without getting caught. I have seen the entrance to one of these tunnels. It was completely filled in with cinder block and concrete. There is also a rumor of tunnels under the Brown Palace that Al Capone used to use to hide out in once in awhile when things got hot. It sounds to me like an explorers paradise down there. I have a few clues but nothing solid yet. Maybe between the two of us, we could figure it out!

Good question, was a meet-up ever established???????

There seem to be a lot of us in the Denver area, there's got to be some kind of get together we could work out?

I've been looking for the downtown tunnels a few years myself with no real luck. So much of downtown has been torn down and rebuilt that most of them are just plain gone.

I've heard lots of rumor and speculation but almost no first hand accounts or evidence. There are tunnels running between the state capitol building and the Brown Palace hotel, but they are active, alarmed and all that good stuff. There are also a goodly number of telecom bunkers and tunnels, newer stuff, all really tied down that I've spent some time in for work.

The majority of the old coal delivery tunnels are gone, though you may find a stretch a block or two long here or there, I've dived down a few and found pretty boring tunnels with lots of dead ends.

If there's a grail I'd love to find it, but I've been looking a LOT and have come up empty. Good luck to you, and for christs sake SHARE!

I have a big hammer, would that help?

Seriously though, we should get together and formulate a plan. Maybe poke around the basement in Brown Palace or get some engineering maps from the Denver City Library. Thoughts?

As far as the Capitol is concerned, they have next to no security and no cameras that I could see. I recently wandered around the building for at least an hour, poking into nooks and crannies and offices without being disturbed by anyone, provided I didn't disturb anyone myself.

There seem to be a lot of us in the Denver area, there's got to be some kind of get together we could work out?

I figured if nothing solid came out of the polls and chats and whatnot then I'd just announce some arbitrary date/time/location for a meet on a monthly basis and people could show up or not. I administered a local chapter of a multinational non-profit organization for a year or two and you really can't let a few people's scheduling or transportation conflicts effect the rest of the group. There's always a "next time".

Cheers, Alpha.

Maybe a jack hammer! The entrance that I know about is in the basement of an apartment building on 14th Ave.. A friend of mine used to live in the building and it was pretty common knowledge that the entrance that is bricked over led to the Capitol Building. I think any kind of hammering on the wall would draw immediate attention, from the police or the ghost that lives in the building!

If there's a grail I'd love to find it, but I've been looking a LOT and have come up empty. Good luck to you, and for christs sake SHARE!

Of course I would share! I've got to get L3'd somehow! LOL! Chainsaw, I recently heard rumor of a possible entrance to some tunnels from an access in Confluence Park. Have you ever heard anything of this? Speaking of shareing, how about taking myself, Daghita, Conscience (and any other newbies for that matter) on a nice easy little outing sometime? Nothing extravigant, just a little get together to say howdy and some basic exploring!

How about we meet at a local eatery (kind of parcel to mexican food myself). Anybody who wants to come is welcome. Everybody pays their own tab. We could chat and intro over some good cheap food somewhere and it takes the pressure off of somebody "hosting" the get together.

Sorry, I just don't have the time at this point. I've run two meet and greets' here in colorado in the last year, and had a fairly weak turnout - but we had a lot of fun. I have very little time left for exploring these days, it would have to be something new and cool for me to justify the time between now and Christmas - early next year looks good, but I doubt y'all want to wait that long. I wish I had the space in the schedule, because I'd love to meet you all and show you around but my wife has had 2 heart surgeries in the last year and we have two little boys - I spend ~12 hours a day at work as it is. I'm all out of vacation time for the year to boot.

If I get an evening free of kid responsibilities I usually spend it exploring my comfy comfy bed...Once we get through teething and I get caught up on sleep and vacation time I'll probably try and set something up.

There's a little place on 8th and Lincoln called Armida's that serves great Mexican (highly recommend los chiles verdes, the #16) and equally awesome margaritas. Plus they have drunken mountain folk getting up on stage for karaoke if we go around 9PM.

When? Any evening on a weekday or Saturday works for me, and Sundays/Fridays are open too.

We should definitely post details in a new thread on the Four Corners board when we establish a time.

Leave it to a woman to have all the answers....

I have people who know people that have info on getting into the tunnels under the Capitol, coming from the hospital side. Daghita and I both run in other circles that tend to dabble in the art of getting into places where you're not supposed to be, lol.

I'll confer with my sources. Have your people get into contact with my people.....

....or I'll just leave the info on here, or something. LOL

OH and as far as meeting up......I'm good for weekday evenings and weekends, as well.

As far as location, anywhere local is good for me.

OK, my feeble attempt at organization! HOW ABOUT... We meet at Armida's (8th and Loncoln) on either next Thursday the 17th of October or second alternative, Thursday December 1st after we get Turkeyday out of the way. Depending on what works best for most of us. Meet between 7:00 and 7:30 so we can have some time to chat before the karaoke gets started (personally, I could do without the drunken mountain karaoke, but....).

Leave it to a woman to have all the answers....

Seek, if you'll come and fill us in a little on the tunnels, I'll buy your dinner and the second round of margaritas!
We need to get some RSVP from anyone who will come so we will have an idea how many. Call the restaurant and make sure they can accommodate us, and make a major post so any of the Colorado people who want to come can make it!
LET'S DO THIS!!! If there's anything I can do to help push this along, just ask!

Next Thursday evening works wonderfully for me. But let me tell ya, there's nothing quite like a drunk hick in flannel and a John Deere cap trying to sing Lowrider.

I'll provide the third round, if we make it that far. ;)

Myself, plus wife, plus maybe a friend. I've never seen the restaurant packed to capacity, there should be plenty of room without a reservation. The place usually doesn't start to fill up until shortly after 8PM, but I'll call ahead anyway.

I'm getting closer with the Captial Hill tunnels info everyone. I may be getting set up with a really good connection as well that could possibly lead to actually having permission to go down there.

Let's keep our collective UE'ing fingers crossed.

1(Seek In Shadows) + 1(Alphawolf) = 2(new best friends)

I'm 100% down with assisting in any effort to get any info on the mythic tunnels...

But alas, the curse of the non-standard work week prevents me from attending a meetup on a Saturday evening.
In the highly unlikely event that anyone's planning on staying late (midnight-ish), however, let me know.
Otherwise, I'll resign myself to waiting until the next one.

None more black..
