How to learn if there is a caretaker on the property?

I am wondering, what do you think the best way of deciding if there is someone on the property you are going to explore. I want to explore and abandoned farm, which is obviously disused. I have found an entrance, but I am afraid there may be someone there watching over the property. There is a structure that I hadn't seen before that looks used. But the mailbox is clearly in disuse, as can be seen by cobwebs inside and out of it. So I have decided to tie a small easily breakable string to the bottom of the gate. If when I come back a few days later, the string is not broken, I will know it is safe to explore there. But if the string is broken, I know there is someone there. Is this a good idea? Also please tell me other ways of dealing with caretakers. Thank you in advance.

Best way to deal with them is to simply be nice and honest. Explain your intentions and ask for permission. As long as you are polite, shouldn't be too much of a problem. Get them involved, ask them about the place, make their thoughts meaningful. Amazing how far being honest can take you sometimes...

And the string is a good idea, should be easy enough.

A camera in your hands will open more doors than any key ever would. Go have a look - I like to drive by a property a few times if I suspect it's being visited at various times of day. See if anyone's moved the gate - who know someday the gate may well be open.

It can be hard to do if it's a ways away. Is there an overlook nearby? Can you telephoto or binocular a good gander?

surveillance is primary unless you intend to seek permission then no need to read further

if you suspect someone is there actually on site, observe the location at night from a distance for interior lighting, unless they are mole people you will see lights going on and off

did you check the driveway for tracks?

is the grass being mowed?

consider the possibility of an absentee caretaker who lives offsite and only visits during the daytime try to establish his routine maybe he only visits on Thursdays

invest a little time and stake it out if its worth doing

Also little tricks like taping over locks will tell you if a building has a caretaker.

Yeah, I was just gonna say to check for lights on at night. Thats an obvious one. Going with a camera in hand and just generally showing a harmless interest in the place will help you if someone is there.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. The hint about checking for lights is a good one. I would be willing to talk to the caretaker themselves if there is one, but the occupied building is rather far into the property, and I would have to already trespass just to speak to them. If I do encounter them while photographing though, I will just tell them my intentions and be polite. The property does look abandoned, with nothing mowed or fixed up. The property is at the end of a road, so there are tracks from many different vehicles. I can't see if there is a vehicle on the property though. It's not outside, but maybe there is a garage there? Tonight I will check the string and for lights, and if both those are negative, I'm pretty sure that it will be clear. Thanks for all the tips.

Good ideas here, I've wondered the same thing. I've been inside places in well populated areas, but have been leery of rural places in case someone saw my car.

Good luck, rapcw, let us know how you do!

Throw some fireworks into the courtyard.

If there's a caretaker there - he / she's sure to make an appearance.

Chris...

We all had ostriches. My dad had an ostrich farm! I remember one day someone came in and said the high altitude bombing of Kosovo had been a limited success, so we all went out and celebrated… by killing an ostrich and boiling it in kiwi fruit.

Along with police. Caretakers tend to frown upon that kind of stuff.

I was sorta joking about the fireworks thing.

Although... I suppose some small firecrackers could have the desired effect without doing any damage / warranting a military response ??

Well today we went back to the entrance, and the string was no where to be found. My dad did not let me go in through the entrance we found, as he was afraid of trespassing. So now we have to go by boat and anchor onto the beach in the back of the property, where theres no fences or trespassing signs. I had always wanted to go in by boat, but he never wanted to do it. But I did get to explore an abandoned building that used to be part of Stenzel Farms near the other farm. It was completely open, and all the trails to it were overgrown.

I got a lot of pictures of the building and surrounding items, but now I don't know where to put the pictures. Should I put it in the photography forum or the regional forum or where?

This is a fine idea in theory, but if there IS a caretaker, he will know someone has been about. I prefer to avoid announcing my presence.

I agree with Chainsaw: a camera in your hand disarms people. I have been ignored by many on-site workers simply by making it very obvious that I'm only after photographs. I have even been greeted by some (especially railroad workers).

If there is a sign saying "caretaker on duty", then you KNOW there is one. But that place looks like a look before you cross the street kinda place. I hope there were some cool motors or something in that shed. I read about people who have been in places with security roaming the same building, and they haven't been caught anything serious yet......

How about this: On your first trip to a new location, (I too am a firm believer in checking it out first) find where you're going to get in and if there's anything like old pieces of wood or metal just kind of propped up over your entrance, move it out of the way. Go back maybe a week or so later and see if it has been put back up. If it has, then you might be outta luck for the time being but if it still looks the way you left it, I say "Go for it".
