| | To sewer dwellers: how do you gain access to where you want to go? < on 7/30/2005 5:26 PM >
| | | I normally do UE above ground but I really want to start getting into sewers. The only problem is that most manhole covers are caked on (with all the heat of day and not being used they kind of look stuck there) and the larger metallic entrances are always bolted shut. Any experienced UErs with some advice? how do you guys usually gain access?

| | | Although a line can cross a busy road to where the manhole is pressed down quite a bit, there is always bound to be a loose manhole lid somewhere along the line. Just get you a crowbar and start pryin. They of course like you describled may be seized in some way. Weather its pressed down into its iron frame by traffic or has excessive leaves, dirt, twigs, etc around it. Its not made for humans to access readily so of course its going to take some work to get them off. So I wouldnt let that deture you. Even if the manhole is a perfect fit they weigh between 70 and 90lbs, so its going to require effort to move anyway.

| | | Take a light sledge and tap around the edges, it might be enough to pop it loose. For bolted entrances, take a big adjustable wrench or a socket and breaker bar. [last edit 7/31/2005 3:08 AM by Random - edited 1 times]

| | | i would go with a crowbar. but for me its easier. theres a cave within blocks of my house with offers a direct connection to an extremely large maze of sewers

| | | I have seen city workers trying to get down a manhole. They used a heavy sledge hammer and a shovel. They were repeatedly slamming down on the manhole and prying up with a shovel. It took them about 25 hits to finally make it so the shovel could open it. It all depends where the manhole is.

| | | Pull a Ghost Busters II and set up some road cones, get some reflective vests and hardhats, and develop a thick "Dude-Guy" accent (smoking a ton of butts helps). Just kidding. I bet exploring storm drains is more fun and less smelly than sewers. You should do that. You don't have to open any manholes for it, either. You just need to find the outfalls.

| | | When we do it in the open, we do it really late at night, as far from people as possible. As Andy said, storm drain outfalls are the best way to go.

| | | You're probably thinking of storm drains rather than sewers. Sewers are in general much more dangerous and unpleasant than drains, and are rarely explored for their own sake. Storm drains are usually clean and poop-free, and won't kill you with methane pockets and fun diseases. Some people explore larger more interesting sewers (such as the ones in Paris), but generally they're avoided unless they lead to a better location. Here's some info to help you get started with drains: http://www.urbex.o...oach/approach.html http://www.infiltr...ations-drains.html http://www.caveclan.org/

| | | I get to the sewers through a small sekrit hole. Manholes work too. But it's scarry down there and the best way to get used to it is to live in a room full of skunks. Most cities have sewers too small to explore, yet some others.....

i think we both are thinking of the same secret hole because its just a couple blocks away from my house. anyways sewers arent even worth it to me. even though i have a large maze of walking height sewer tunnels right underneath my house. i just think its to hard to have a good time in crappy air. anyone who has been in a sewer definitely knows what i mean.

| | | I use a carabiner and a short length (1 meter) of rope whenever possible. This only works if there is a hole in the manhole large enough to fit the carabiner through. A lot easier than lugging a crowbar all night.

| | | I like the lid popper thats a short length of rope with a few inch long bar tied to one end of it. Put the bar through the center hole and bring up the slack put the other end of the rop over your shoulder or waist and lift up with your legs. Easy way to open the biggest of lids....well maybe not the biggest but most of them. It helps if the skunks help out. If there isnt a center hole then a small flatbar works great too. Heck Ive even used a stick before on the light ones. The ones that are glued down from traffic and crap usually are in too high a visibility area to use, look for less travelled ones.

| | | I dunno...last manhole I popped was under the glaring sun of broad daylight, and there were shitloads of people around. I wore steel-toed boots and had a clipboard tucked under my arm and I did a lot of pointing...here, there, over there, etc. and tried to look serious. I positioned a hazard orange cone thingy nearby and did some more pointing. Then we slid underground and so forth and we didn't have any problems. If you look like you belong near a manhole, chances are that people will think you actually DO belong near a manhole. Bullshit baffles brains. Seriously.

| | | Now I have never tried this and have NO clue if it would even work.... BUT wouldn't you be able to park your car REALLY close to the manhole attach some serious steel cable to the manhole and to the hitch of your truck/car and pop it like that? Now keep in mind DO NOT attach a manhole to your car and floor it.. I have no idea if it'll just tear your car apart or pop it out, if it didn't pull just right your not going to do anything but break something..

| | | Just ride your bike around and look for stuff. If you see a bridge with a crick on one side, but nothing on the other, bingo! Also, when you do find a drain this way, be sure to follow it the other way as it usually becomes a drain that way too. Sometimes you have to follow a creek on foot a very long way before it becomes a drain, but nearly all do eventually. Also walk near your city's reservoires (my city has a hiking trail right next to it) and look for drains.

There was a manhole near my friends house that always had the intriguing sound of rushing water emanating from it. The problem was, we tried every tool we could think of and couldn't get it open. I had the bright idea of parking my truck over top of it and using a comealong attached to the frame of the truck to pull open the manhole. This won't work unless you have a truck with enough lift to fit the comealong between it and the manhole. Sadly, ther was just a tiny pipe entering the manhole chamber, it just had a short drop off, which made the noise.
If you try it the way you've suggested, Pravus, place a large blanket over the towrope and manhole. It should slow down any fast moving objects. [last edit 9/11/2005 2:20 AM by Random - edited 1 times]
