So how physically demanding is your guys' UE?

Hi, long time lurker first time poster

I usually do a lot of rooftop climbing, so it involves a lot of strength training to get up there and climb down, tonight I kind of screwed up on the way down and got a nasty scrape on my arm. Do you guys usually just hike around or are you really active explorers?

hahahahah

my last UE involved atleast an hour hike around some suckass mountain in 95 degree weather and woods.. and we kept getting turned around

ok.. well.. maybe I'm exaggerating.. it was worth the hike, but the hike in itself sucked!

I tend to visit pretty remote sites, so I would have so say yes, a lot of the sites require some degree of activity.

A site that I've been checking out lately is 1200' below the canyon rim. The easy (but currently inaccessible) way is just climb on an old incline down the rim. The not so easy route involves a long hike through some amazingly rugged country.

That one on is pry the worst as far as rough access is concerned, but several hundred foot climbs up scree slopes and long hikes are pretty much the norm.

I know of sites I have been to that have entrances that don't require any climbing or hardcore physical activity, but are really dangerous to go in through because of visibility to passer-by-ers, that have entrances on the roof that are safer to use. I've been exploring with friends before, climbed up onto the roof to get into an entrance, and had those friends try numerous times to climb and fail, making us unable to continue.

"Active" exploring (as opposed to passive...?) isn't alway necessary, but being in-shape enough to climb, jump, and run certainly renders many obstacles insignificant.

I like to go exploring in places that have tour-through cars, ala "It's a Small World..."

Saves me from actually, you know, walking. And I can enjoy some popcorn on the way through.

Hi, and welcome!

Yeah, rooftop climbing is fun! I'm not very strong but fortunately strong enough not to fall down from the ladders.
Better be careful up there. What happened to you on the way down? Misplaced foot?

The tedious, although much safer route, is to use a climbing harness (small, and easy to throw on) and a carabiner - like the guys working in cherry pickers do. It will slow your ascent and descent - but if you are climbing some tall shit - could save your life. Not trying to preach, but $25 worth of gear that doesn't take up hardly any room is worth it in my book. ;)

I don't do allot of tough physical explorations like climbing or actie sites. I mostly stick to drains. Sure, tough on the neck, back and legs, but nothing too physical.

I'm in decent enough shape to climb a ladder or two, but beyond that my legs are going to be screaming pretty quick. I can handle walking all day though.

That's what a few years of fast food and cheap beer will do to you.

Yeah, exterior acess roofing is the part of my UE that is the most physically challenging, each trip usually requires a few leaps if faith and a lot of climbing, especially when there aren't any ladders around (the funnest ones).

When I go UEing I tend to do a lot of climbing. Its not that I allways have to its just that its fun. Im my groups monkey man. It really does come in handy for getting the entire group into a location, sometimes I can climb up and into the building and then open a door from the inside.

Abandonments in my area are usually pretty easy to access. All the danger in those places is induced by me trying to climb smokestacks and things. I can walk a long time, and am in good enough physical shape to get my ass out of a place if there's someone there who I don't want to meet. I'm too young to drive, so I usually have to walk everywhere, but that's kind of a blessing. There's lots of great hiking around here.
Infiltration is another story. I like to go with one other person. That way we can watch eachother's backs. You have to be in good physical shape to be sneaking into occupied places, so you can quickly scurry down or up stairs, or get out of the site quickly. Charisma is also useful in some situations.

As my name implies, I do a lot of climbing. I don't have a fear of heights, and I climb anything. One time I was going to Splendid China in kissimmee when we decided to cross trough the woods. We spent 4 hours going trough 1/2 a mile of bushes. We didn't had any flashlights or any illumination device, so we spent 2 hours in the dark. That was by far the longest hike. Also I was previusly run from there, and I had to run, or better said, crouch over 1/2 miles of grass so that I wasn't seems, then run another 1/2. I like adventure, so anything that involves physical strength or adrenaline I 'm in.

Most of the UE's I go on arnt really that physically intense, allthough we usually somehow make it intense anyway. I wouldnt say im physically fit to do all kinda of crazy crap, but I can hold my own if need be. And if theres a roof where ever we go, were gettin on it one way or another ;)

I'd say draining is the most physically demanding thing we do. It's not that bad, but crouching for a half mile in "Texas-Hot" tunnels will certainly take it out of you. I've done some buildering from time to time, but it's not too hard as long as I pace myself. Walking or hiking? I can do that all day. I grew up in Arkansas and I haven't had a car except for the past 3 months, so I've done my share of moving on foot.

Rest in Peace, Ninjalicious. I know that wherever you are, you're finding the best sites for us already.

Amen, Draining is probably the most tough form of exploring. Walking in a Crouch for a mile under ground is no easy task!

A lot of my exploration is VERY easy/lazy, like walking a few yards from the car straight into an open window or door. Such a lightweight.
