	from the UE Encyclopedia To test on out, first put it on (duh again). Put your hand over the cartridges (two purple filters) and try to breathe in. If the mask fits securly on your face, you shouldn't be able to breath at all. Next is to try breathing out. Put your hand over the black vent in the bottom middle and try to breathe out. You shouldn't be able to push any air out. If you can breathe in or out at all, its not fitting right. It may seem obvious, but it does no good if the bad air will get in due to an ill fitted mask. 	Negative Pressure Test: · Don the respirator according to the manufacturer's instructions. · Cover and seal the filter cartridge(s) using the palm of your hand(s). · Gently inhale through the respirator and hold your breath approximately 10 seconds. · The respirator should collapse slightly. Check, feel and listen for leaks around the facepiece. · If there are no leaks, it can be reasonably assumed that there is a good seal and the respirator is not leaking. Positive Pressure Test: · Cover the exhalation valve with the palm of your hand. · Gently exhale but do not break the seal around the facepiece. · The respirator should expand slightly with a slight positive pressure increase in the facepiece. · If there are no leaks and no loss of pressure, it can be reasonably assumed that there is a good seal.

	Mine usually needs to be a bit tight to get the proper fit when I test it. It's not that comfortable, gets very hot and leaves a nice telltale mark on my face, but I wouldn't go exploring in old buildings without it. www.urbanexploration.ca

	I've only used one, but it woorks excellent, and it's comfy: AOSafety Quicklatch half face with P-100 filter. 	My wife uses a respirator in some of her wood shop work because she is allergic to certain of the sealers and what not. She found out real quick that you not only have to seal the respirator good, but the goggles as well as particles can get in there. I don't know if that's a real help with UE-ing as I don't know if Asbestos can get in through the eyes the way some allergens such as mold can. "Well, let me just jump into my time machine, go back to the Twelfth Century and ask the vampires to postpone their ancient prophecy for a few days while you take in dinner and a show."

Seconded, this is the on I use. It's comfortable and quite durable...none of the plastic filter casings a lot of respirators have.

	From army training: 1) Don mask. 2) Exhale as much air as possible. 3) Cover filter. 4) Attempt to breath. If attempt to breath is successful, you just died. If attempt to breath is unsuccessful, you may just live. I don't know much about half-face respirators, but the idea is just silly if you are seriously trying to protect yourself. Army issue masks are comfortable for extended use, I'm sure you can find them at surplus stores. [last edit 6/28/2005 12:36 AM by Flagg - edited 2 times]

	Ive got a JSP Maximask, very comfortable due to the silicon facepiece. It also has a speech diaphragm, which lets you speak clearly whilst wearing it. Beagle has nearly the same mask as me, but does not have a speech diaphragm, and I can rarely ever hear what he is saying firt time. http://www.stratfo...assets/MAXIMAS.JPG And no, its not me in the picture! 	You can also test an n100 by holding a bottle of vanilla extract near your nose, or having someone smoking a cigarette blow smoke at you. If you can smell/taste either, you don't have a good seal. Companies use something called Bitrex to test their respirators, but that's not something most people would have lying around.

	I know I love my M17A1 mask. Filters aren't too expensive, and it is a pretty damn comfortable mask. Pretty simple to seal, and it even has a drinking straw! Although, not sure how well anyone would take to finding you UE'ing with it on... ;) "...believe me therein upon mine honour, for you will thereby feel in your nockhole a most wonderful pleasure, both in regard of the softness of the said down and of the temporate heat of the goose, which is easily communicated to the bum-gut..."
