I spend of a lot of time in that area.

There's some interesting things there. Some of them are big - can't miss it

Have you seen the old power plant building on the west side? Was there just recently. Know any background or information on it? I have a few more pix. Looks like it has a basement as well but I didn't go inside.

I know a little bit of the history of this plant.

The power plant is the last remnant of the town of Walsen. Walsen was a small town just west of Walsenburg built around the Walsen coal mine. The mine closed in 1931 and the town was abandoned shortly afterwards, but it looks like the power plant may have been active into the 70's. The townsite and mine were on the hillside just north of the power plant.

The plant was (appropriately enough) coal fired. It looks like there was a basement under the northern side of the building. I'm not so sure about the south side.

It looks like the eastern half of the building was entirely dismantled. The silo in the southeast corner today is in the middle of the southern wall in older pictures.

Here is a picture of the plant from 1975:

And a couple of mine:

Thanks for that information. Sheds a lot of light on how/where/why it's there. I had no idea there was a town west of the original city. I suppose the mine is sealed as well or at the very least, on private property? Any other interesting places to look at around there? I go once a year to the Rio Grand National Forrest to ride bikes in the mountains with friends and would be interested in other sites. I noticed just north of Raton, on the west side of the freeway, there are two long red structures with what appears to be a house on the far end/center. Ever been there?

The townsite and mine of Cameron is supposed to be just about a mile sw of Walsenburg. There isn't supposed to be a whole lot left, but I haven't located the site yet.

I was doing a bit more research, it looks like these mines were owned by CF&I and primarily provided coal for the steel mill in Pueblo.

I haven't seen the site near Raton yet, I will have to look for it.

There is the remnants of a ghost town on the north side of Raton pass. Interesting church ruins visible from the highway.

There is supposed to be the ruins of Gardiner and a whole lot of coke ovens somewhere near Raton.

There looks to be a lot of interesting things hiding in that area.

Anyone else seen an abandoned school in or around Walsenburg? My girl swears she ghosted it with a friend of hers about 12 years ago, chalkboards on the walls and papers all about.
She doesn't remember where exactly it was, near a residential though.
