Spots with demoliton and Silicosis

Hello,

I just got back from Fostoria in West Virginia. I approached it like I do every site I got permission to film as long as I liked and started right away. It is an old glass plant that has had some demo work done on it. I noticed after about 4 hours in and out in various locations that my eyes were irritated and I attributed this to wiping my face with my shirt. I didn't sleep well that night and the next morning I bought a respirator with N 95 filters and a pair of safety glasses. I used that most of the day on saturday. That night about nine pm my respirations just slowed down to about 15 per minute I had this weird taste in my mouth and A little bit of a cough plus a soar throat from using the respirator for about 6- 8 hours while filming.

I am not really concerned with asbestos although I did buy a respirator with P-100 filters. I was so wigged out I didn't go back Sunday. My questions are

1(. Has anybody used a respirator for an extended period of time and then later felt and breath like you still have it on and

2(. What about the dangers of silicosis which can be acute and deadly. What is the exposure limit from OSHa regarding this particulate. Can you buy affordable particulate counters to assess air quality??

1) Im pretty sure a normal respirator isn't ment to be used for much longer then a few hours, at least thats what I assume since thay did desine things like forced air respirators to be used for extended periods of time in areas like that. Im not an expert its just what I would think... i would look into it deeper but its getting kinda late, maybe someone else can shed some light?

I'd not suggest you use a N95 due to the fact that its not an effective finlter for most substances that you'd stir up. The P100 filters are designed for good air flow and it's an effective hepa-filter. In the military we've traied with our carbon filters. And before we go into the gas hut you run around for about two hours with them on. At least we did in our training. And yeah, we were tired, but nothing else really.

So I'd suggest you get an nice R53HE-P100 filter-mask that fits your face good and know you'll be safe.

And if you want you can get a nice fullface mask.

Have you used a full face mask?? What about visibility?? And comfort.

I always use a fullface but the comfort is somewhat less and so is visability. It really depends from type to type. I prefere to wear a Swiss SM90 since comfort is quite nice and they look cool .

Thanks for the reply..I found out what I was exposed to that caused the problem it was mold. I should have known with a wooden structure over 100 years old and water. My eyes got irritated as well.

Also have you ever used a respirator and developed throat irritation???

I noticed that when I was breathing that my throat got dried out quite a bit?? Is this normal.

Again thanks for the replies.

I get a soar throat using a respirator all the time. I have always attributed it to either the subconcious worrying that my respirator isn't functioning properly and that I'm inhaling a crapload of nasty little dusties (thus convincing myself that my throat is soar) and/or the irregularity of breath and the little bit of extra strain used to breath in and out normally. I wouldn't be surprised if those P100's filtered some of the moisture out of the air, though. I could be very wrong, but I would imagine that some of the particles they're designed to filter out are the same size, if not smaller, than a lot of the microscopic water droplets that make up air moisture.

Hey thanks..I noticed that my mouth became incredibly dry while I was breathing and fear does play a role. I was all alone in this plant it was dark and extremely unsafe. eventually it takes its toll. I filmed off and on for about 12 hours. I feel changed after this potent experience. Thanks for the comments.
