Looking for person to explore a site in Mesa, AZ
< on 6/9/2005 3:21 AM >

Hi -

I have a location that I would like to explore further. It is an old flour mill that is huge. I recently entered the site and found some neat tunnels under the mill. I wont go in alone tho ... I did run into 1 homeless guy that seemed ok, but I would like another person with me on the next trip. Please let me know if anyone lives around here and wants to join me.

Thanks
John

Hey what's up, I live in north Phoenix and I am interested in this site. DjMalign mentioned it to me, he used to live here and then moved to Atlanta. I haven't had a chance to check it out since I don't go to Mesa that often, but I would be willing to head out there with someone who knows how to get there and how to get in. Weekends are good for me, how about you?

Hello. I know of this mill as well. I have not been there in a while and am not familiar with any added security, but I do recall seeing a possible underground passage that seemed to lead to at least the other building(two story) accross from the main tower. Formerly, there was an above ground connection between the two that was unfortunately burned away by arsonists. I am free on weekends. Email me or message me or whatever about it.

Hey. I hate to sound like a spoiler but you will most likely not be able to access the tempe hayden flour mill period. When I lived in tempe I tried over and over and over again. If you get past the fence you have welded doors plus its a super busy intersection with a traffic cop across the street with no cover. In other words, look outside metro phoenix, it sucks out there. Downtown has some places but they're all alarmed and connected to active sites. My suggestion is to go to tuscon, prescott and Jerome or get a ghost town book. there's an abandoned mansion in NW az in the middle of the mountains called hualapai mansion that's totally badass, but unfortunately az doesn't have much to offer.

Welded doors sound like a major deterrence, but LiNUXG33K said he got inside. I would be concerned about campus police as well, this place is right next to ASU isn't it?

With regards to the old ghost town/mining books, didn't people used to come to AZ in the 1920's for the dry air and stay at sanatariums/sanatoriums? I think Phoenix used to be a popular destination for tuberculosis patients. I found some interesting links, but I don't suppose any of these buildings are left today, huh?

i seriously doubt he actually got in. if he provides pics to prove it i'll be shocked. i'm not being mean, but unless there's been major vandalism there's no way in. go check it out for yourself, its off rio salado and mill ave in the heart of tempe.

as for any sanitariums in phoenix you gotta realise that phoenix almost never keeps an abandoned structure. Historically its policy is to demolish everything due to the cheap land, hance why renovation isn't huge out there. It does happen but i lived there for a year and a half and only got into a handful of places that weren't that interesting.

the only notable places I know of are:
1. Glendale off glendale ave west of downtown has a stockade that's surrounded by car repair shops and junkyards on every side with no way in unless you go through the buisnesses. Ask maybe?
2. downtown has 2 schools and 1 church off van buren between 7th street and 5th ave. the church is seriously falling apart except in 2 sections that are used as artist loft spaces. The 2 schools are slated to turn into museums and are right in the downtown area. the bums sleep on the steps and not inside, not breaking in at all and leaving no viable entrance. Try, but even if you got in i doubt it would be that cool looking.
3. A church on 16th street south of van buren. It has a big fence 2 yeards away from the church plus seriously boarded up windwos and doors. No cover whatsoever

Last but not least I do know of a couple missile silos near tuscon that were dug up after getting filled. just be careful of land owners who seem to be quite possesive of those sites. PM me if you want more info on that.

DJ Malign...I got in quite easily, but it was before I owned a camera. What time frame are you speaking of? That is, when did you last observe the place or do some recon? The last time I saw it, it had "acquired" a green opaque fence (the kind with the strips that block the holes in the fence). I am very interested in this traffic cop, tell me more?

As for the 51st Ave place, it is heavily surrounded by car junk places, but the western approach looks promising. There is an overgrown field strewn over with debris (including what looks like the fuselage of a small plane) that heads eastward. At the end, there is a fence and then to the right lies the "newer" looking building that looks like it is glued to the wall of factory. After that I recall being able to get south of this newer looking building and noticing the exposed gap between the walls of the abandoned factory and the newer building. If one can squeeze through and watch the various trash in there, then the northside can be accessed.

I lived in phenix from october 03' to March this past year. i saw the mill sometime is 04' and lived about 7 blocks away. One of my co-workers said he had gotten in there too but that was back in 2001 before they put a lot of security precautions up.

Please, do get in and take pics. I'd definitely give you props. I might be a little extra negative when it comes to phoenix because I hated living out there and did not get that much exploring inside phoenix done due to lack of locations and the few that were available had a lack of viable entrances, hence why I explored mainly outside phoenix going to the titan 2 missile silos and Jerome.

Yeah, my visit was before Oct '03. They have indeed probably added serious security. Phoenix is a pretty bad place for exploration and the heat pretty much relegates it to the nighttime or early morning.

LiNUXG33K said that the flour mill he went into was in Mesa and the mill DjMalign mentioned is in Tempe. I am wondering if they are the same site.

I know of an abandoned site in Mesa on Broadway between Country Club amd Mesa Dr that is right next to the train tracks. I've been itching to explore it for quite some time. Word on the street is that a satanic cult used to worship in there. I'm not sure if this is the one LiNUXG33K is talking about, because he described his as huge and I wouldn't describe this one as 'huge'.

I'm going to go scout it out and see if I can't find a way in.

I heard the mill mentioned on the ABC 15 six o'clock news this evening, in a bit about how Phoenix streets got their names. Mill Ave was named for the Hayden Flour Mill (duh) but what I did not know is that this place has been around since 1874, having been rebuilt several times of course. I am really anxious to check it out, but I'll be out of town until August 1st. Hopefully after that I will get a chance. Here is some more info about it that I was able to find:

Aerial photo of mill site
City of Tempe mill history and high res photos
Brief history - Arizona Republic article

After looking at the photos, it really does look tightly secured (probably because of a three-alarm fire there in 2002).

Monty, what kind of site is out in Mesa by the train tracks? Factory, warehouse, something like that?

You can try borders like DJ suggested, or check out the website: Ghosttowns.com They feature some info on the ghost towns through out the US and Canada. Even include information on what to expect road wise, etc.

If you're looking for some cool ghost towns or least some with a lot of old shit to explore, check out the area between Sierra Vista and Tombstone off Charleston Rd. The old Mammoth kill sites are that way along with some cool looking mining remains.
