Read today in the Free Press that this 1881 landmark will be torn down over the next 8 months. Your thought's about this?

None really. "Cold hearted" I hear you say; I blame the Free Press. A year or two ago I may have responded with outrage, now I am indifferent. I have known for a long time that it was only a matter of time until it came down, so I have already had time to mourn and be angry or sad by it. Now I just accept it.

I am saddened when such things are torn down, just because I think the city should preserve its history and heritage. That being said, I think that there are times when safety is a concern, and this building isn't in much of its former glory in any shape or form. It has suffered through fires, vandalism etc and unfortunately can not be salvaged for preservation.

Mill will go with a blast

Trigger-person draw?

By ROSS ROMANIUK, CITY HALL REPORTER

Get your tickets to see a dynamite show down at the old Ogilvie Mills next month.

Winnipeggers will get a blast out of watching the historic flour mill blow up real good when a demolition contractor implodes the abandoned compound's two major buildings in an event tentatively slated for July 10.

Alan McColman, whose Edmonton-based firm is handling the job, said the explosion will be "cool to see."

"Oh, yeah -- it will be something," the president of McColman & Sons Demolition Ltd. told The Sun yesterday.

"We're considering going to a local charity and seeing if they're interested in selling tickets or pushing the button."

The implosion -- Winnipeg's first such dynamite-spurred destruction of a building since the Canada Packers complex was blown up in March 2001 -- stands to become quite a draw, literally.

The firm is considering working with charities to hold a raffle to choose a trigger man -- or woman -- who would flip the switch to set off the explosives that bring down the mill's 11-storey tower and nearby power plant connected to a smokestack.

Will be filmed

In addition, the demolition is expected to be filmed by the Discovery Channel for a television documentary. And it will probably be part of a movie shoot for a disaster-themed TV flick to be produced in Winnipeg this summer.

"They're excited by the opportunity that they could capture an explosion or implosion of a building that is already taking place," Kenny Boyce, the city's film czar, said of the U.S. movie's producers.

Boyce refused to reveal the film or studios making it, though it's rumoured to be a sequel to Category 6: Day of Destruction, a weather-themed movie shot in Winnipeg last year.

"In other cities when they do these implosions, they take advantage of them," said Mayor Sam Katz.

"Maybe something positive will come from this because, as you know, you can't duplicate it. You can only implode once."

Preliminary demolition work will begin next week on the mill, which was built in 1881 and has stood empty for years.

The entire razing of the plant and its 27 silos will take eight months and cost city hall $643,000.

Coun. Russ Wyatt (Transcona) said it makes sense to raise cash through the work by "selling the imploding rights," noting the Packers implosion drew a large crowd.

Although I'm sad to see it go, it's inevitible that it was going to happen. Some good memories there though..

I'm hoping to get this on video; I managed to get the Canada Packers demo on tape too.

To put a positive spin on this, I hear the new stadium is going to be built in the same area (or at least something will)... some new stuff to check out!

Okay I took a peek around the mill today to see how the demolition is going; the outermost building is pretty well demolished with the exception of the stack. There's bits of other activity going on here and there, but you could tell things were not ready for an implosion quite yet.

I asked one of the workers about it, he said that it will be at least 3 more weeks before the "big bang"....

If anybody is looking to get one last visit in, then now's the time..(although I would think security might be a bit tight nowadays)

I was just there June 26th (ehh, has it been almost a month already? wow) and if anything was tight, it wasn't security... tight squeeze into the basement crawling under a pile of rubble though. Do you think they've really vamped up security that much? Considering that it's possible to just walk around the fence, I find the idea of security at the site laughable.

I was able to get in and have a look around last weekend with nobody around; they had a lot of stuff on-site for the demo work and prep for the blast. Things are more than a bit "loose" around right now though.. I saw a couple bits of rubble and brick fall nearby when I was there.

The other times during the week I've been by there's always been something going on with at least a few guys there. I'm thinking that as the date get's closer they may step things up a bit. Still not impossible for a last look though..

Old mill prepped to blow

Building to be imploded

By ROSS ROMANIUK, CITY HALL REPORTER

As far as delicate and dangerous jobs go, this one is dynamite.

Demolition crews are inserting explosives into the old Ogilvie Mills plant to prepare to blast the old Winnipeg industrial behemoth into rubble and dust.

"They're in the process of drilling holes in the columns and putting explosives in right now," city facilities manager Jerry Comeau told The Sun.

GUTTED BY FIRE

The demolition of the Ogilvie plant's 11-storey tower -- which was gutted by a fire on Halloween night in 1997 -- and nearby power smokestack has been set for Aug. 14, a month after it was expected to be brought down.

McColman & Sons Demolition Ltd. is overseeing preparations, which involve boring into columns of the 125-year-old edifice.

"It's kind of a long process. I don't know if you've ever drilled through concrete, but it's labour-intensive," Comeau said.

"The tricky part is that they have to put explosives on the main floor, second floor and seventh floor -- and on the seventh floor, part of the floor is gone because of a previous fire. So the tricky thing is how they're going to get up to that level to do the drilling to put the explosives in."

The demolition -- the city's first major implosion since a Canada Packers plant was blown up in March 2001 -- is anticipated to be among the most spectacular in Winnipeg's recent history.

Cable television's Discovery Channel is reportedly interested in filming the implosion. In addition, producers of a sequel to Category 6: Day of Destruction, a weather-disaster TV movie shot in Winnipeg last year, are rumoured to be eyeing the blast for a scene in their new project.

Municipal film czar Kenny Boyce refused to confirm the flick will use the implosion, though he pointed out that "the city tries very hard to help make movie magic happen."

The cost of the demolition -- to include a wrecking-ball razing of the plant's 27 silos following the implosion -- is pegged at $643,000.

Coun. Mike Pagtakhan (Point Douglas) said it will likely be December before the site is cleared.

The chimney, about a dozen metres tall, stands only a few metres from Higgins Avenue which will be cleared of traffic for the Sunday show.

"I've seen two of them in my lifetime," Comeau said of implosions. "They're pretty impressive."

Go team discovery channel!

I say that they better not leave the 5 roses lot vacant after. If they are tearing down a building over 100 years old then they better make something good there.

CG: Couldn't agree more..
After filming the very slow and painful destruction of the Capital Theatre on Donald I came to the same conclusion.

The "Clowns" have absolutely NO idea what they are doing to our heritage by destroying these landmarks.

BTW, The Capital was NOT flooded.

Just a matter of time before they waste the Met.

The Met is one building that I would love to get into. Too bad Centure Venture won't let me in.
