Well I guess I'm a fucking idiot, and so is half of the TC clan. But maybe that's why we've been to some very cool places that you can only get to from a sewer. Or some you could only get into from a sewer at the time we went, which was way before anyone even close to as nuts as us even thought of trying the obvious way due to.....other factors. To be honest, they smell WAY better than a pit toilet, and can't be any worse breathing that. In fact a small group of us had to rappell in a sewer to get to a drain below and we found a kick ass underground waterfall. But what do I know, I'm just a dumbass who doesn't explore.

Beware of siphons and lift stations.

Feel free to ask what either of which are.

We try to keep out of the larger interceptors, not much good comes of it, except for one place.

What would that be?

Also, it dont really matter what size sewer it is, virtually any size sewer can have a lift station. Any sewer big enough for a person to get into and walk in would be guaranteed to have siphons for them to cross rivers.

It does matter. The larger interceptors have more flow and suck big time for walking in. Smaller ones have less flow and suck to various degrees to walk in. Also we know where the river is and that helps with siphons and lift stations. The one place I was referring to has been rumored to be sealed up, it was a cave that had access from the sewer due to a break. Guess they fixed it. One guy that got in there happened to take a major interceptor, which you DON'T want to fall down in. You can easily tell the difference between the interceptors by asking yourself this question 'Should I have brought a boat?' It also helps to know where you're going, rather than walking around aimlessly. But this simple rule will help keep anyone out of trouble, stay out of the deep fast moving shit.

Did you try and get in that Junkyard? I assume we are thinking of the same place. You gotta be pretty crazy to try that one.

Macsbug if you're thinking NMT, we are thinking the same place. I never tried that yet. But it's supposed to be fixed now, so I haven't bothered. If it wasn't I have a plan. I know a worker from St. Paul who said Stahlman's is collapsed by an unused portion so they bricked it off. The Fountain Cave drain is accessable, but that's a storm drain, not sanitary. It's down the hill from the marker on Sheppard Rd. Everyone I know has tried to find it, but nobody ever has.

Lift stations are pumping stations. After gravity sewers flow to a deep grade or into a valley, it may become rediculously deep for the contractor to dig, so "lift stations" are installed to bring the sewer flow up out of a valley or deep grade. Which would save costs on putting them in. Another example is say you have a small neighborhood that was built in a "valley" and the main sewer that this neighborhood needs to tie into is above the neighborhood streets. Well, shit cant flow uphill, so they will place a lift station in to pump the sewage out of the area and up into the main line.

Siphons are pipes that are used to cross a river typically. If you have a creek or river big enough, it would be next to impossible or very dangerous to do an open cut excavation in order for a large interceptor to be installed. So they put in smaller pipes that equal the same amount of water capacity as the one big pipe. Each pipe placed underneath the river is calculated to act like a siphon tube, basically pumping the water underneath the river all by itself, just add gravity.

Siphons are placed underneath rivers with a directional boring machine:

http://www.yoderan...inventory/8416.jpg

Below is a link that shows a diagram of a siphon, also has some technical information in there, also has information on how to calculate flow.

http://www.lmnoeng...InvertedSiphon.htm

So with all that said, yea both are very dangerous if your on the business end on either of these things. They can kill you quite easily. I got the pleasure to see a very large lift station when it was being built, this lift station had a 4' diameter interceptor coming in, split into 2 channels and had grinders placed in the channels to chop up the solids so the pumps can pass them easier. Care to get some limbs caught in there? lol

Junkyard, of course I am talking about NMT. I didn't think even you would be crazy enough to try that one. Don't waste your time on the Fountain Cave drain, at least when there are breweries in the area to explore. Nothing bad ever comes from that, and nobody I met ever got in trouble for trying to explore there. Ever.

Well. yesterday i went on a scouting trip to the spot below the marker and im pretty damned sure i found the drain you are talking about. Im going to go there later tonight with my maglite and check it out

You realize that you obsorb some of that through your skin, right? I mean, of course your not going to think anything of it because nothing has happened to you. Yet again, I always go by the saying: "Give a man a little luck and shit for brains will do". I'm not calling anyone stupid for UE'ing in sanitary sewers but just think about that quote for a minute. Nobody holds all the answers.

Now by no means am I saying I am against UE in a sanitary sewer, if it floats your boat then dont forget your paddle. I have no problem with it, but you wont catch me in one. Of course plumbers every day are subjected to some wastewater contact, as are pipe fitters that work on pumping stations or work with diverting sewers during construction. Even they however take precautions on avoiding contact with anything like that if at all possible.

Considering he was talking about just walking in it, he'd be fine if he wore any kind of decent water proof shoe (all I wear are water proof steel toed Red Wing boots with thick soles, so hey). I mean yeah you're right about absorbing it through your skin, that leads to chemical burns potentially (used to use degreaser at an old job, burned my hand for a few weeks with it), murcury absorbtion (responsible for the Mad Hatter effect), etc. but simple common sense takes care of most of this. The only thing I would really be careful about are the gases down there... The only reason I don't do sewers is because of the high potential of toxic gas, and that can be detected by various things on the market. Also, I suppose air-born bacteria and viruses would be a threat... if you didnt wear a decent respirator (correct me if I'm wrong, but a HEPA filter would be perfect though the oxygen supply may still be lacking).

All I'm saying, once again, is common sense should be used and sewer going would be safe. Go down with just a light and sandals, I bet you take a few years off your life.

I like the way you think except for the "Mad Hatter" part, that was Radium poisoning. But close.

Actually hat makers rubbed Murcury into the leather as a softener, and in turn got it into thier blood stream through the skin making them go insane. But close.

I think you're right. You'll have to excuse me and my occasional drinking. I was thinking about the Radium watch dial painters. Cancer, teeth and hair falling out, that sort of thing.

Either way, theres a chance of it being in the sewers... Radiation is hard to block unless you're wearing lead boots, and we all have a pair of those sitting around right...? Murcury and bacteria atleast you can block by staying water proof as much as possible and wearing a gasmask for viruses and crap. Really though, stick to storm drains. More predictable, cleaner usually, safer.
