| | | Local question, where would you explore if you could get in anywhere? < on 5/20/2005 1:24 AM >
| | | I know there are similar threads in the Main section, but I was curious about the question and wanted a local flavor. So....If you could get into any building/tunnel/structure/complex in BC, and spend a few hours poking around inside, what location would you pick? Myself, I've really been curious about the Downtown East Side lately, so my pick would be the Pantages Theatre at 144 East Hastings. A few lousy photos here: www.vcn.bc.ca/hrtgvanc/pantages.htm It's got history second to none, (Chaplin performed there, Babe Ruth was there) and from the crappy pics that I've been able to find, it looks to be in beautiful condition inside. I'd love to get inside for a few hours and explore. If your willing to run the gauntlet of crackheads and junkies, that area has some great old buildings. Have a look sometime at the upper floors of some of the buildings in the skids, everything looks vacant up there. Due to the street scene, I'm sure everything is sealed up tight, however, some "social engineering" could be the way to go in this area. What would your local pick be? I'm sure we could all learn about some new places if we get some good responses.

| | | "SIGN HERE, MURDERER TOO 1154 W. Broadway Though almost obscured by the Toys ‘R' Us banner stapled on as part of a recent heritage compromise, the BowMac sign was once a wonder to behold. Erected in 1959 on the site of the Bowell Maclean car lot, the red and blue sign stood 10 stories tall and could be seen from Burnaby, several miles away. It was, in fact, the world's largest free-standing electrical sign - and the only one ever to harbour a murderer. In July 1965, a radio promotions manager named Rene Castellani climbed onto a small platform atop the sign and vowed to stay there until all the cars on the lot were sold. But while Castellani was attracting national attention with his sales gimmick, he was also killing his wife: poisoning her so slowly that no one - not the cops, not her family, not the strawberry blonde switchboard girl he planned to marry after his wife was safely in the ground - would suspect a thing. Everyday the doting husband had been making his wife her favourite treat: a vanilla milkshake, spiked with arsenic. As her health failed and she was hospitalized, her doting hubby kept bringing in that daily dose of vanilla. By August, she was dead. Unfortunately for Castellani, a puzzled intern ordered some post-mortem tests, which turned up the arsenic. A search of Castellani's home revealed the poison stashed beneath the sink. Suspicions were confirmed by a lab analysis of the dead woman's hair. Lengths that had grown during the seven days husband Rene was up selling cars atop the BowMac sign were remarkably free of arsenic. Castellani was convicted and sentenced to death, later commuted to life in prison. " (VANCOUVER SECRETS OF THE CITY) -http://www.vanmag...8/secrets_bad.html

| | | Don't know too much about Metrotown, but Lougheed Mall may be interesting, especially where the old movie theatre used to be. The whole area is configured differently now, but I'm thinking that the theatres have to still be down there, with the sloping floor, there's not much you can do with that area.

| | | I actually hadn't thought of Lougheed mall like that... I've been through various parts of that mall's back ways, but hadn't thought of that in particular... I wish I'd payed more attention when the theatres closed down, to what they did exactly, but I think Sport check occupies part of where the theatres were.

| | | I'd go for the docks. Maybe not the docks themselves, but those spooky areas around them where people go who don't want to be found. Also, I'd check out the (damn...name escapes me now. Used to be Tent City a couple of years ago...old red brick building apparently being refitted/renoed to be affordable housing). I don't know Vancouver very well. Victoria...different story. I'd check out the Janion Building, and the old soda factory. I'd also want to gt into Market Square and find out once and for all if the tunnel stories are true. The rail yards across Johnston St. Bridge would be good as well. I'd also like to ge into the Legislature for a 'private tour.' The Empress Hotel would be another spot. Too many to name... I remember going there often as a kid. A few times I exited out from the bottom of the theatre near the screen. In behind there is a cavernous hallway and stairwell that runs at the back of all 3 theatres, and what seemed like a thousand steps to get out into the parking lot. All that space can't be occupied by the new stores. I would bet that the theatres are still under there somewhere.

Yeah, I heard those stories about the underground tunnels here too. They're very intriguing. About 6-7 years ago me and a few friends went on a long walk through downtown to Beacon Hill Park and Ross Bay Cemetary with a friend of ours who had compiled a bunch of stories about the tunnels and the whereabouts of the entrances. "Apparently" those tunnels are still being used today by satanists and other people- but this is just a rumor so who knows if there's any truth to it. But we do have one of the highest rates in the world of witches and satanists so you never know..

| | | Yeah, I think it actually is fact that there's a high number of satanists (relatively speaking of course) and wiccans as well in victoria. But neither satanism or wicca is as sensationalized and weird as they are often portrayed. It is quite possible that tunnels could be used for ritualistic practices, but it wouldn't be likely to be anything freaky unless it was different cults of some sort...

What? I'm not supposed to be here?
| | Re: Local question, where would you explore if you could get in anywhere? <Reply # 16 on 6/5/2005 7:23 PM >
| | | Since I'm a bit of a Telephone geek (ok, phreak) I'd most want to get into a certain Telus Central Office. This CO is unlike most in that it is completely underground, it is designed for emergency use only. So if an earthquake hit or a nuke or something it is supposed to run all the phone service. I've only read and heard tiny mentions of it, except for one acquaintance of mine who's dad works for Telus and claims to have been in it. Apparently it is located somewhere around Willingdon & Canada Way in Burnaby. Ever since I first heard about it, that is where I wanted to go. Cheers! -PoT

| | Re: Local question, where would you explore if you could get in anywhere? <Reply # 18 on 6/6/2005 8:02 PM >
| | | I have thought of another place that I would be interested in going, possibly even more than the hidden Telus CO. There's this building on 1st Avenue, between Nanaimo and Kamloops on the South side of 1st that intrigues me. It is a large building and there's frequently a black Hummer parked there too. We've done some poking around and it seems to belong to BC Hydro, but they have better security there than I'd assume Hydro would bother with. They have lots of cameras, eye-beams and dogs. I would assume the eye-beams are set in such a way that the dogs couldn't set them off. We were poking around there one time and walked by the fenced area in the back, went around front and when we got around back again someone let the dogs out to greet us. Anyone have any details on what this may be? Cheers! -PoT

| | | I've always wanted to check out the big sugar factory in the port of Vancouver. They've shut down all access to the road that runs along the port (unless you have actual business there) because of 911. I've been busted by the railway police down there (near Brighton Beach), and they ran us into the computer, so I have to probably figure a reason to "legitimately" find myself on port authority property next time I go.
