How do you recon / tips & tricks

Ive had a couple of planned recon trips turn into full scale explorations here recently because the opportunity was present and I just seized it.

Looking back I wish I had thought one of them out first and went in with a plan instead of spontaneously diving in. But I was faced with a decision and decided the opportunity might not exist if I waited. Bummer. One of those places is now closed up so in hind sight I guess it was now or never.

What I would like to know is do most of you prefer scouting a place out first and prepare for a trip there later, (adds to the fun planning a mission etc). Or do you just run across an "opportunity" as I often do and go for it?
(my camera and at least one xenon flashlight are in the car almost all the time)

I realize different situations call for different tactics

1. abandoned?
2. occupied?
3. night only?

appreciate your feedback and experience on the advantages and disadvantages.

For me personally, it all depends on the location. Most locations I explore, I tend to make 1-2 scouting trips. Usually the first trip would be to scout out the layout of the property. See how secure the location is. Usually check to see if people are moving in and out of the property. Usually check for tire tracks and see how frequent people are moving around the property. This trip is usually done during the day. My Night scouting trip would consist of looking to see where (if any) spotlights are. To see if the place is secured during the night, such as looking to see if there is a gate closed at the front entrance. If everything checks out, I usually end up exploring it shortly after.

I don't often go in for recon only trips. They definitely have merit, I'm just rarely that meticulous . I'll often walk round the sight checking for cameras and security guys before jumping in, but as I travel quite light there isn't much call for a more methodical approach.

I do limited planning, generally with what i'm looking at it isn't neccesary. I'm at novice level so i'm trying to stay within realistic boundaries, so that I do not bight off more tha I can chew.

walk around the building, take pictures of the outside, note for ways to enter, get the general idea and then next trip go for it!...if there a open entrance during your scouting trip, GO FOR IT!

Usually, If I find something, I explore it right then. No scouting or nothing, just dive on in. Then again, I have also set of lots of alarms, almost been caught by security guards, The Police, etc. but then again that is part of the fun....

I don't do allot of scouting. I usually ride by the place a few times. I drive a granny car, so no one suspects a thing. Most of my scouting missions are mainly finding a few different places I can park my car. When I see an opportunity, I go for it right away. All of my gear stays in the trunk of my car, so no worries there.

Usually I'll drive around the place in question a few times looking for good places to park/hide the car and to see if I can spot any security cameras or guards or any activity. Sometimes I'll take a quick run in to see whats around and where good hiding places are within the building/property.

I rarely do hardcore exploration of the innards of a complex on the first go though. And definitely not by myself.

thanks, I have started doing that since I realized I was getting over anxious and jumping in a lot so I took a deep breath and last couple of days Ive just been cruising and making mental notes. Weekdays are good to check out where people/employees maintenance are parking and entering and I remembered to bring some binoculars this week and got some good ideas where I couldnt get close enough to see.

The most scouting I do is to find it on satellite pictures and maps to figure out where to park, what trails if any lead to it, maybe try and figure out some basic layout... mostly stuff I would otherwise have to drive around it to figure it out. Gives me something to do when I can't actually get out and see it.

When it actually comes to getting there I usually just dive right in and figure it out on the fly.

If somethin looks a lil risky, yeah I like to scout and recon first. but if during that venture you realize "hmm, well there's clearly nothing to worry about right now" then there's really no reason not to unless you haven't given yourself enough time. Sometimes i just like to swing by a place and do some recon to whet my apetite till I have time to spend in the place.

This might sound like a very strange thing - but go have lunch nearby the spot you are checking out. Go through the area once before so you know how to dress appropriate for the area, but then grab some food, sit down and eat.

Noone bothers you if you look like you belong and are doing something totally harmless. Eating is something that you can do and be looking around while doing - look for light poles, areas of high traffic, bars/convenience stores/liquor stores, signs of habitation, security company signs...

Granted, I like to know where I'm going if what I'm doing is going to take some effort to get into and out of undetected and will take the time to do it right. If it's a one off abandoned barn in the middle of nowhere I'll wander right on in.

Just my two cents.

I usually see a building or area and walk around it looking at possible entrances and just the general make up of the area. Then I would get stuff ready and normally come back at night and with a few friends. Other then that I just explore immediately when the opportunity presents itself.

Almost all of my 'recon' is done by gathering info from books, internet, maps, other people etc. When I go to a new site, though it's always better to walk all the way round the perimeter once or twice first so I know the entire picture, instead of going through the first access point I spot.
