| | Abandoned Mining Town < on 5/18/2005 12:55 AM >
| | | Hey people, Tomorrow I am going to Vancouver Island on business. I have about a three to four hour window to explore. Can anybody give me some info and or directions to this abandoned mining town heading south towards Chemainus from Nanaimo, it would be greatly helpful. Apparently it is just foundations at this point and some possible (blocked) mine entrances, any help would be greatly appreciated.

| | | Cassidy? Morden? There's not really anything there. Cassidy was born in 1918. It only lasted until 1936, when it was all sold off in truckloads. Houses were bought and moved out. Larger buildings were dismantled. Even the water, power and sewer systems were all removed. By 1950 it was just squares of dirt scattered amongst the trees outlining where lots had been. It's about 10-15 kms south of Nanaimo, just off of the Island Highway. Pay no mind to the Cassidy Hotel.... It's a shit stain.

Could you pinpoint these places on a map?

| | | Yes, Although I doubt you will need a map to find it, from what I was told there is a lot more to see besides what I found.

| | | There are still several concrete foundations there, including that of the bank and the boarding house for single miners. The mine is still accessible as well, though it's in pretty sad shape now - it's basically a collapsed depression in the ground now. Granby was the official name of the town - Morden was another, separate community-mining operation a few kilometres north of Granby. The concrete pit head structure at Morden is the last remaining surface mining remnant on Vancouver Island - definitely worth a look. Granby was a purpose-built company town designed to supply coal to another Granby Consolidated Mining operation (and another ghost town) - Anyox, which produced copper (one of the largest copper operations in the British Empire). The company spared little expense in building the town of Granby, laying out a model community of neat streets (named after various trees planted on each one), California-style bungalow houses, and the boarding house, which offered many comfort and health features to the coal miners that were not found in other operations. Granby also built and operated the mines at Phoenix, in the hills above Greenwood. Across the highway from Morden, the ghost town of South Wellington is also interesting - the slack pile is huge (now partially hidden by vegetation, but still visible. There are a bunch of original miner's houses there as well. Extension is another place worth some exploration - it too was built on coal mining - another HUGE slack pile (way bigger than South Wellington) - lots of buildings, and the original mine opening is still visible (well preserved, concrete arches going into the ground - these sit below the town, on a rail grade).

| | | Good info, so what is Cassidy now was called Granby? Was the rest of the townsite up the hill or across the Freeway? Am I right to say that if you follow the road up behind the tracks that it will lead you to the original mine entrance?

| | | Damn, wish I knew of these places when I lived in Vic. Used to drive up to Nanaimo at least once a month, would've made for a good stop...

| | | The Granby townsite was up the road that leads under the tracks - across the highway from the Cassidy Inn. You can see some workings on the left side of the road, a few hundred metres from the highway - the mine is on the right side of the road, not far into the woods. The townsite was arranged on a grid pattern, some of which may still be seen (the trees), on the right side of the road. There are still some homes on the townsite (not original ones). Cassidy was separate - not much of a town - Granby was much bigger.

| | | Anvil, do you mean directly across the road as if you are standing next to the bank foundations and just basically turn around? It runs right trough the tracks? Or the one you drive up over the tracks? Pardon all the questions, I just don't have a lot of time when I go, usually an hour or two depending on the ferry.N.

| | | The mine is on the same side of the road as the townsite (bank and bunkhouse foundations) - towards the existing highway, in the woods. It's before the dirt road that intersects with the paved road - in a wooded area. Not hard to find.
