A couple of questions concering draining

Hi! I just registered recently, but I've been reading for awhile. This is a very great and informative site. Anyways, I just had two questions:

1. How bright of a flashlight do you need to make a difference? I once tried looking around with a cheap, generic one and I realized I could see just as well without it. What would be the minimum for finding your way around?

2. I've heard that lack of oxygen may be a problem in some tunnels. Would it be possible to get some bottled oxygen somewhere? Would it help?

just about any size light will work if you wait for your eyes to adjust. I use a small 3 LED headlamp that you can barely tell is on in the daytime, but if you wait underground for about 5 minutes before you turn it on, it works great!

Red colored LED lights will preserve your night vision in between turning off and on the light. It makes it easier for your eyes to adjust.

LED is the way to go. In daylight/low light youll feel like youve wasted money, but once you get into the real dark, youll be glad you have it. I have a 4 led light and it can light up about 50 feet (estimate) in a dark basement hallway

Huh, red so you can keep your night vision? Not all the night vision in the world will help you when draining, unless it is a very shoddily made drain... Most any light will work, you only need to be able to see maybe two feet in front of your feet, so you can tell if you are gonna step in a sinkhole, or on a hobo or whatever, but a more powerful light is nice - you can see what is up ahead of you - features or turns in the drain, which I think makes it more interesting then wandering forever until you bump into something. Plus you can just plain see better, so it isn't a pain in the ass to see shit. I've walked through drains with just a little led in front of me, where I couldn't see where my feet were going, and with a spotlight, where it was like daylight. Somewhere in the middle is where I'd prefer. I dunno what other people think, but I really dislike the light that LEDs give off, it just doesn't seem as natural to my eyes, and I don't think I have as good of depth perception with it.

I just meant red light makes it easier for your eyes to adjust from light to no light. In other words if you have to go "lights out" for a min or two and then realize you were spooked for no reason your eyes will adjust faster than if you are using a regular white light. I did not, however, mean to use an LED keychain. Obviously proper lighting in a drain is imperative or you'll end up dead.

There are a variety of *very* powerful LED flashlights on the market these days. However, these can be pricy and the same effect can be achieved by placing a red "gel" filter over a regular flashlight (this is just colored cellophane). You can get the red "gels" in military surplus stores or a theater supply shop. Just cut to size and use a flashlight attachment or duct tape it to your light.

If you're interested in a more powerfull FL(Flash Light) then I'd suggest the ones the cops use. MagLights I personally use a 3 battery version of the one they have and when I stoped at an accident I found it quite usefull, the cops actually asked to borrow mine cause it was brighter than theirs. Keep some new batteries in the thing. Oh and the entire thing can be dissasembled to be cleaned.

The Mag FL's float, you can drop them with almost no worry of the bulb breaking and if you do there's a second bulb in foam in the end of the battery cover. Oh and the reason the cops have them and no "clubs" here in Ontario is that it's called a "Vegimatic". You beat someone with this FL and you will turn them into a Vegetable.

I believe that the standard military red filters will fit into the lens section.

I also carry around a little 2AA version too, so when you're changeing your big one... you get it.

Hope you all are having fun out there
