Any of you experienced explorers have any info to share on grain elevators?

Dangers? What might be interesting to look at/photograph? (besides the structure itself)

Depends... What kind of grain elevators are you talking about? There are generally two types: Harbor and midwestern. The harbor ones are used to load and unload ships, whereas the midwestern ones generally take loads from trucks and load it onto trains.

Most old ones have been demolished or burnt down (the where a real nasty fire hazards since grain dust can be explosive)

They where invented in Buffalo, NY, and that is the place supposedly that has the most elevators anywhere in the US...Many where abandonded when the canal was built and barges could float from the great lakes to the atlantic, hence many where abandoned and torn down....

I have explored one harbor type in my area. there a few to choose from, but I chose this one since it was vacant at the time (I think that they have a tenants now who uses it)....Alot of conveyor belts, and usually a manlift or two. You will have to clim alot of ladder usuallly to get to the top. They are pretty neat, and the one I was in is massive. I was not able to get pictures since this elevator is part of an active port with pretty tight security, and I was there at night.

Also, No smoking!!! You could start a prettygood fire in there....

Heres the one I told you about, its been inactive for many years and I have heard that the cost to demolish it is more than the property is worth. Very thick concrete and very tall. Ive recon'd it a few times but never went in the fence its right next to the cop garage. (Dallas equipment service center fueling and repairing police cars 24/7) It could be done however.

Did I mention its got dogs? Big ole watch dogs (I used the dogs pic for my avatar because they are really cool and act really viscious) but they know me now and dont even bark at me! The day I took the dog pic they were waiting for me to come over and say something to them.

I would really like to see the inside of this one and get a view from the top.

ive been in our local grain elevator here in small town colorado and there are a few dangers around not including owners and 12 gauges ;). Ours is made completely out of wood but theres no rot since its in our arid climate. The biggest danger is trap doors into the silos that are actually in the floor. Most of these doors in ours arent sturdy enough to walk on so if you step on one, its a good 200 foot fall into empty bins. not a fun experience. if you decide to go in one, be VERY careful where you step, because its not only rotten wood that can collapse. Most of the midwestern ones that are all over the place dont actually have staircases going up. Ours has like 20 or so ladders to the top. Kinda cool and kinda weird at the same time. It can be a chore getting to the top. theres always good views from the top though! The elevator has been here for more than 100 years so there are all sorts of panorama photos of the town that date way back. its pretty neat to get up there and see that the town still looks and is layed out just as it was 100 years ago. it lets you know that not that much changes in small towns. Just watch for trap doors and other things like that and you should be alright. also, most are still actually owned and not really abandoned. The ones ive acquired about are actually semi active, some still used for grain storage. Just be weary of the one you select, and it doesnt hurt to talk to the owners. Its not that hard to find them in a smallish town. I wouldnt have know about the trap doors if i hadnt talked to them before i went in... Good luck and have fun!

Safest place to be is next to a police station :)

If the dogs know you, then a pack of cheap hot dogs will make them fast friends!

Here is a picture of the one I want to check out. It's a midwestern, concrete one that in the past has loaded trains but i dont think it does anymore.
