|  | | | I'm trying to identify this blood-red liquid:
It was found in the basement of an old factory, which may or may not have done lead refining as part of the productions going on there. My friend, who was the one who went with me to the site, thinks that it's mercuric oxide, and I was wondering if anyone could either confirm or deny if that could be a possible ID for the stuff.

| | | | The bins were metal, although I don't know what kind. The bins also had what seemed to be a silverish, metalish solid substance clumped in part of the bin also. As for dripping from pipes, it didn't seem to be under any pipes, and there were several bins with that stuff at the bottom in addition to what was found mixed in with water on the basement floor. I assumed it was some sort of by-product from while the factory was still open. I'm not sure how well the color shows up in the picture, but the stuff was a deep, vibrant red, not the usual color of rust, at least most I've seen.

Exactly what I was thinking. We did that with some water/sludge from an oil refinery here. It was very enlightening...

| | | | Just by looking at it, it looks a bit like rust. It could be a by-product of a chemical reaction between whatever the shiny metal is and the bin too. I'm no chemistry expert so it would probably be difficult to tell exactly what it is from even a first-hand description.
I'd automatically assume it was something dangerous, and proceed as if it were. Even if it is not, you're probably better safe than sorry.
EDIT: Especially dealing with lead, which can sometimes cause health problems.

I was offered some money to do so, but I didn't feel up to dying that day. It would have probably permanently closed the sight to others too, and I was really only thinking of the other explorers when I turned down the offer.
While exploring we started to find that stuff not only in vats, but also at the end of tunnels, where the smell got very bad and unbasement like, it smelled more like I was back in chem lab, and we started feeling rather lightheaded and such, and soon left because we didn't know what the stuff was. I'm just trying to gather a list of possible hazardous substances at the site, and this seemed to be the last one that I can't identify.

The silvery stuff in the bin looks like lead. Was this factory some sort of refinery? If so, that may be a waste bin of leechate and other metallic impurities.
If it's got a strong smell, it's likely some sort of volatile organic compound, which means its probably very poisonous and generally nasty. If you ever do decide to collect a sample, make sure it's in a glass (not plastic) jar and don't get any on your skin.

I came to the general conclusion (though it was strictly a guess) that it was from some sort of sewage tank. It was at the bottom of a concrete tube-like structure. It smelled basic (opposite of acrid) & organic, not like a port-a-potty though. Dark red liquid with yellow froth.
