| | | I know this may sound like a dumb question, but is it possible to get a signal inside a drain with a cellphone? My brother in law has a manhole cover on his front lawn - we checked it out and it goes down to a storm drain. we're new to exploring so we thought we'd go down and check it out.

| | | Ya it's possible but don't count on it for safety. Why don't you go down in the drain and find out?

| | | you may get a signal but it all depends on where you are and how deep the drain goes.

| | | My cellphone never seems to lose signal, even in the deepest drains, yet my UE partner's phone won't work right at an entrance. So there's a chance it will work.

| | | It's just a radio. A simple two-way radio. Operates at 800MHz or 1900MHz, depending on your carrier. In other words: don't trust it to work absolutely everywhere, but if you have a decent transmitter, and are close enough to a tower, you're okay.

| | | try this: easy to build what ham radio guys call a passive radiator just an antennae tuned to the length of the frequency your cell service operates on mounted AND grounded at the entrance of the tunnel (does not connect to your phone) some cities use this to assist commercial broadcast reception in highway tunnels been around since the 1960s it will also work on microwave (cell phone) too RF signals in VHF UHF and above bounce around pretty good but get absorbed easily and wont penetrate ground and concrete, digital cell phones typically running less than 0.3 of a watt wont penetrate much of anything you'll need to get the signal to bounce or radiate into the hole somehow

| | | i used to explore the Paris underground quarries and catacombs when I lived in Paris around 30m under the surface, no cell phone signal of course... except when you are able to find a ventilation shaft. it does not systematically work, sometimes ou have to climb some rungs if any.

| | | Here's a semi-interesting (read: mostly boring) cellphone in a drain experience. I sold my truck today while I was draining. I was about an hour into a drain when my phone went off. It was on vibrate, but the thing still scared the crap out of me.

| | | depends where you are and what phone service you have.. my friend and i went draining, and about 50 feet into the drain, his phone lost service. although there was a hill above the drain, so the further we went in the less service it had. he had to go out to the opening to make a call.

| | | It all depends on what frequency your cell phone works at. I know with most of the GSM phones,(ex. T-Mobile) especially at the 1900 Mhz level, they have a harder time penetrating through bigger buildings, structures, and anything that may block a signal. A GSM phone that works on 850 Mhz, can penetrate though many of the places that the 1900 Mhz phones cannot. For draining, I would think that the FRS might be the best way to go..

| | | Tri-mode CDMA phones will have much better reception in a drain than any GSM phone will, although nothing will work if you are very deep. A worldband phone would be a best bet, but they are expensive. Keep your phone in a plastic bag though, I know someone who soaked theirs.

Satellite phones have coverage almost anywhere. But Satellite phones are expensive, I mean really expensive. I was checking pricing on phones, and on calling plans and there is absolutely no way I would be purchasing a satellite phone, unless the employer wants to pay for it. $49.95 for 30 mins of Voice per month? $1000 for a phone.... No thanks..

... adding to what McBain said, you would still have the same problem as you would with a normal cell phone, that the signal can't penetrate through the pipe and ground. This is especially true with metal corrugated pipe, which acts as a Faraday cage, blocking EM radiation (such as cell phone signals) almost completely.
